On Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m., at the Guilderland Public Library, you can get a stamps-eye view of the history of the United States from the country's earliest days to the divisiveness of the Civil War. This program offers an enlightening view of the role stamps played in what was then the country’s most economical and efficient method of communication: the US Mail.
This program is presented by members of the Fort Orange Stamp Club. This organization is notable in that, of the four clubs once in the Greater Albany area — itself, the Women’s Seal & Stamp Club of Albany, the Schenectady Stamp Club, and the Uncle Sam Stamp Club of Troy, Fort Orange is the sole survivor. As such, it has the area’s institutional memory of philately, making this program vital for anyone with even a passing interest in stamp collecting.
Painting with light
If your kids are looking for something illuminating to do this winter break, why not come to GPL on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 2:30 p.m., and try painting with light?
Kids in grades three through 12 are encouraged to create beautiful works of art with just some glow sticks and a camera. And, you will be able to take home a print of your creation.

Film Series
On Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 6:30 p.m., GPL’s Local Connections Film Series continues with a 2003 film about the racehorse Seabiscuit, with scenes filmed at the Saratoga Race Track. Seabiscuit is rated PG-13 and is two hours and 20 minutes. Popcorn will be served.
First Friday Family Films
Enjoy the time-travelling magic that only Mr. Peabody’s “WABAC” (pronounced “Wayback”) Machine creates when you bring the kids to GPL on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., to see the big-screen adventures of Mr. Peabody and Sherman. This non-dynamic duo — respectively a bow-tie wearing beagle with amazing creative and intellectual powers — and his myopic straight man/adopted son, attempt to correct a near-catastrophic time rift Sherman created while trying to impress his girlfriend.
The movie runs 90 minutes and is rated PG and popcorn will be served.
“No Nukes”
A very special photographic display is going to be installed in the library’s Helderberg Room at the end of January, the work of French-American photographer Lionel DeLevingne who has been documenting the anti-nuclear movement since the early 1970s.
This exhibit complements Mr. DeLevingne’s March 19 presentation at the Digital Photo Forum. There he will discuss his work as a photojournalist, specifically as documented in his book To the Village: From Montague to Fukushima. The Digital Photo Area photographers gather to discuss work they are doing and to share information about how to improve their work. Deirdre Flint who performs at the Guilderland Public Library on Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. as part of GPL’s Second Sunday Concert Series hangs out at the intersection where folk music and stand-up comedy collide, so this promises to be a fun and entertaining musical event.
Flint sings about adult themes from time to time — dating, aging, bridesmaid dresses, Keeping-Up-With The-Jones's — which means her show is a bit edgy. She’s been lauded by Billboard Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor and USA Today for her special brand of humor. This promises to be a popular event, so come early.
Cake decorating
Rebecca Yates is trained in the Wilton method of cake decorating, and she’ll be at GPL on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 10 a.m., to share many of her innovative secrets with you.
Yates is an instructor in the culinary program at Schenectady County Community College (and is the owner of Little Bean Cakes). Her interactive method of instruction means that you’ll get a practical, two-hour class in torting, filling, frosting, and decorating.
You will learn to make a frosting flower and will decorate two cupcakes to bring home. You'll also get to keep a decorating tip that you've used in the class, and Yates will have recipes and book suggestions. The class is limited in size, so register soon by calling 456-2400, ext. 2, or sign up online.

Facebook fundamentals
If you’re curious about social media (and what the hype is all about), then come to GPL on Monday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m., and find out how it can connect you with family and friends near and far.
You’ll learn Facebook basics: How to get started setting up your account, some of the fun features available to Facebook users, and how to protect your privacy online. There will be time for questions and hands-on practice in this small-group class. It is helpful for registrants to have an active email account before the class. If you do not have an email account, you will need to set one up during this session. Note: This is a repeat of the session held last September.

Yoga for teens
Teens can learn the benefits of yoga— improved posture, greater strength and flexibility, improved calm concentration — by attending Yoga for Teens at GPL on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m.
Bring a yoga mat and join the fun with Rashmi Koratkar of Yogi Minds. These classes are designed specifically for adolescent populations based on research done by Harvard Medical School and Kripalu School of Yoga.

The Twin Towers photos
GPL’s Photo Forum on Thursday, January 15, at 7 pm, focuses on the extraordinary work of Konstantin Petrov, an electrician who worked a night shift at Windows on the World, the restaurant atop Tower One of the late World Trade Center.
Petrov took some stunning — and through the lens of history, heartbreaking — photographs of the buildings in the early morning hours. His work will be shown and described by Photo Forum participant Dick Connery.
MLK Day

Schenectady Theatre for Children will be at GPL on Friday, Jan. 2, at 1 p.m., to present The Reluctant Dragon, the story of a young boy who makes friends with a poetry-loving dragon. This is wonderful for the boy and the dragon, but it makes the villagers in the boy’s town frightened and angry. St. George is called to slay the dragon, but events turn out differently than anyone expects! (Good thing, too.) Children are going to really enjoy this program.
Fire and The Last Mohican
Two extraordinary movies open the year at GPL. On Friday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m., the First Friday Family Film series presents a children’s flick about planes, and fire and rescue. This film is 83 minutes long, and is rated PG. It’s a hoot.
And then GPL's Local Connections Film Series picks up on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 6:30 p.m., with the movie adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Last of the Mohicans. Albany and the Adirondack Region are featured settings in this film. The movie runs 112 minutes, and is rated R. There will be free popcorn.
Li'l Lego Club
GPL’s Lego Club for children in kindergarten through grade two 2 continues on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 3:30 p.m.

The Guilderland Public Library is looking for teens who can commit to helping with our Book Buddies program this season. You will spend time once a week reading with a younger child in grades one through four, and encouraging them in their reading skills.
The actual Book Buddy sessions will run on Thursdays from 3 p.m. through 5:30 p.m., in January and February. When you attend the training, you can tell us when you’re available for the sessions; we will be as accommodating as we can.

In a multi-media lecture at the Guilderland Public Library on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m., author and food historian Peter G. Rose delves into the early history of the life of Saint Nicholas, and explains how this humble person became the icon that he is today.
“Joyful Traditions: How the Dutch Brought Us Santa, Presents & Treats” is part of the “Speakers in the Humanities” series that brings distinguished scholars to audiences across New York.
Rose will explain the various changes in Saint Nicholas’s veneration, and relate how he was brought to America by the Dutch in the 17th Century and transformed into Santa in the 19th Century. The talk encompasses such subjects as literature, religion, and fine arts to describe the extraordinary story of Saint Nicholas, which has had a lasting impact on American culture.
Rose will have her latest book, Delicious December, available for purchase at this event. Along with her work as an author, she is a columnist and food historian. She has lectured on a variety of topics related to Dutch-American culinary history at The Smithsonian Institute, the National Gallery of Art, the Culinary Institute of America, New York University, The New-York Historical Society, and many other societies and libraries in New York State.
This Speakers in the Humanities event, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Come to the Hobbit party

GPL’s Li’l Lego Club for children in kindergarten through grade two is back and really snapping together. The next session is on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 3:30 p.m.
We will meet in the story hour room and use our imagination for some creative play with friends. Bring your own bricks or create with ours. As usual, creations that you bring to show off will be kept separate from the library supplies.

Altamont
Altamont is the focus of a book signing at GPL with author Keith C. Lee on Friday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m.
Lee will be talking about his new book, — Altamont — the latest locale profiled in the popular Images of America series.
Come hear Mr. Lee's presentation, complemented by illustrations from the book. Copies will be available for sale and author's autograph.

This month’s Digital Photo Forum at the Guilderland Public Library is on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. and focuses on Creativity with Light. Everyone is invited to attend this practical, hands-on class.
Photographer Dorey Olmer will report on a day-long photo seminar offered by National Geographic. The key take-away from the seminar is that the right light is the secret ingredient that lets you turn an ordinary subject into a magical photograph. Examples will be shown.
The Digital Photo Forum is where area photographers gather to discuss work they are doing and to share information about how to improve their work. This is an open forum, with occasional special guest photographers. All are welcome and are invited to bring their work to share and also their questions. Bring work on memory cards, USB drives, CDs. The group meets the third Thursday of each month, except December and August.
Giraffes Can't Dance?
It’s true: giraffes cannot dance. Children ages four through seven can witness the humorous proof of this startling fact at GPL on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 10:30 a.m.
First you’ll watch the Giraffes Can’t Dance movie, and then read books about jungle animals, music, and dance. Then you will make your very own giraffe puppet.
The program is presented by Barbara Lukas of WMHT.
Every child who attends this program will receive a personal copy of the book Giraffes Can’t Dance to take home, read, and keep for their very own. Please remember each child must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

GPL hosts blood drive
The library will host a Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, Nov. 24, from 1 to 6 p.m.
The need for blood locally remains constant, and donations are needed to offset holiday blood shortages. You can donate a pint of blood every 56 days. You’re encouraged to eat a meal prior to giving blood and drink plenty of water. Photo ID is required at donation time. Blood donation requirements include a minimum weight of 115 pounds and minimum age of 17. A 16-year old may donate blood with written parental consent. There is no upper age limit for donating blood. Many health conditions and medications do not prevent someone from donating blood. People taking insulin, blood pressure, thyroid, and cholesterol medications, aspirin, antidepressants, and hormone replacement can give blood. Tattoos are also okay as long as they are healed and have been done in a reputable tattoo facility. To make a donation appointment, please call the Red Cross at 1-800 RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Quick: Name the Seven Dwarfs
That’s the kind of challenge you’ll face when you come to Tuesday Night Trivia at GPL at 7 p.m., on Nov. 25. Trivia master Joe Michon-Huneau will pit you and your team so that you can test your command of UBI (Useless Bits of Information).
Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. Teams should be made up of four or fewer people. No registration is required; just come with your team. This experience will probably dwarf any other trivia competition you’ve faced.
And, oh, by the way, from the classic 1937 Disney Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, they’re Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, and Dopey. (How many did you get?)
Happy Thanksgiving
The library will close at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, so that our staff can prepare for their Thanksgiving gatherings. GPL will be closed all day Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 27.
The library will be open regular hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28.
