Guilderland Library Notes for Tuesday, December 30, 2014

Get a fresh start with the New Year!

The Guilderland Public Library is offering you a New Year’s Resolution that’s easy to keep.

If you have any overdue or “lost” materials at home, bring them back to the library, and all is forgiven. No fines, no guilt. You get a fresh start, and your friends and neighbors once again get to borrow materials that have been out of circulation.

Here’s how it works: From Friday, Jan. 2, through Saturday, Jan. 31, just drop off your overdue items, and fees and fines related to those items will be cleared from your record. This includes items that are listed as lost; return these lost items, and the associated fines go away.

We’re running this Fresh Start program so that all our materials come back, and you do, too.

Happy New Year!

The Reluctant Dragon

Schenectady Theatre for Children will be at GPL on Friday, Jan. 2, at 1 p.m., to present The Reluctant Dragon, the story of a young boy who makes friends with a poetry-loving dragon. This is wonderful for the boy and the dragon, but it makes the villagers in the boy’s town frightened and angry. St. George is called to slay the dragon, but events turn out differently than anyone expects! (Good thing, too.)  Children are going to really enjoy this program.

Fire and The Last Mohican

Two extraordinary movies open the year at GPL. On Friday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m., the First Friday Family Film series presents a children’s flick about planes, and fire and rescue. This film is 83 minutes long, and is rated PG. It’s a hoot.

And then GPL's Local Connections Film Series picks up on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 6:30 p.m., with the movie adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Last of the Mohicans. Albany and the Adirondack Region are featured settings in this film. The movie runs 112 minutes, and is rated R. There will be free popcorn.

Li'l Lego Club

GPL’s Lego Club for children in kindergarten through grade two 2 continues on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 3:30 p.m.

Meet in the Story hour Room, and be ready to use your imagination for some creative play with friends. Bring your own bricks or create with ours. As usual, creations that you bring to show off will be kept separate from the library supplies.

Let us know you’re coming by calling 456-2400, ext. 4.

Stitch 'n' Giggle Club

Join us on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 4 p.m., for the next meeting of our monthly Stitch ‘n’ Giggle Club.

GPL staff will be available to help kids in grades four and up with your knitting or crocheting project. Don’t know how to knit or crochet? No problem, we can help.

Bring size 8 knitting needles or an 8mm (size L) crochet hook and we’ll get you started. We provide the yarn; you supply the creativity, and feel free to bring your own after-school snack, too.

We do need you to call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register. (We have to make sure we have enough yarn for everybody.)

Winter Giving Tree

needs you

The next time you visit GPL, you’ll see the Giving Tree in the lobby, and you’ll see a constellation of stars on the Giving Tree. Each star represents the donation of a person who appreciates all the special events — for kids, teens, and adults —the Foundation funds.

Won’t you join them?  The Foundation does so much to support your library. And now the Foundation needs your support.

This year, you're in effect giving double! An anonymous donor is matching your contributions, dollar for dollar.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Holiday hours

GPL will close at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and be closed all day Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, for the New Year’s holiday. It will reopen at 10 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 2.  Your virtual local library is always open at www.guilpl.org.
