Guilderland Library Notes for Tuesday, December 23, 2014

Calling all teens entering grades seven through 12. Do you enjoy working with children? Need to earn volunteer hours? Interested in adding activities to your college applications? If so, mark 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29 or Tuesday, Dec. 30, on your calendars.

The Guilderland Public Library is looking for teens who can commit to helping with our Book Buddies program this season. You will spend time once a week reading with a younger child in grades one through four, and encouraging them in their reading skills.

The actual Book Buddy sessions will run on Thursdays from 3 p.m. through 5:30 p.m., in January and February. When you attend the training, you can tell us when you’re available for the sessions; we will be as accommodating as we can.

Attendance at one training session is mandatory. Please call 456-2400, ext. 4 to let us know that you want to be part of this extraordinarily rewarding program.

Drop-in card gaming

The winter school break is even more entertaining when tweens and teens bring Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! or other cards for a fun 90 minutes of playing and sharing at Drop-in Card Gaming at GPL on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 1:30 p.m.

Come with a friend or make new ones. No registration is required, just show up and deal.

Winter Giving Tree

When you contribute to the Foundation’s Winter Giving Tree, you’re helping underwrite many special library programs and services that are not funded by taxpayer dollars.

So next time you visit GPL, and you see the Giving Tree in the lobby, think of all the events –for kids, teens, and adults — you’ve enjoyed.  Thank you for your generosity.

This year, you're — in effect — giving double. An anonymous donor is matching your contributions, dollar for dollar!

Parents: Looking for a special gift for your child’s teachers? Give them a Star on the Giving Tree. We’ll send an acknowledgement to you and the teacher.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

The Reluctant Dragon

will be at GPL

Schenectady Theatre for Children will be at GPL on Friday, Jan. 2, at 1 p.m., to present The Reluctant Dragon, the story of a young boy who makes friends with a poetry-loving dragon. This is wonderful for the boy and the dragon, but it makes the villagers in the boy’s town frightened and angry. St. George is called to slay the dragon, but events turn out differently than anyone expects! (Good thing, too.)  Children are going to really enjoy this program.

The Last Mohican and Fire

Two extraordinary movies open the year at GPL. On Friday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m., the First Friday Family Film series presents a children’s flick about planes, and fire and rescue. This film is 83 minutes long, and is rated PG. It’s a hoot.

And then GPL's Local Connections Film Series picks up on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 6:30 p.m., with the movie adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Last of the Mohicans. Albany and the Adirondack Region are featured settings in this film. The movie runs 112 minutes, and is rated R.  There will be popcorn.

Holiday hours

GPL will close at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and be closed all day Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, for the New Year’s holiday. It will reopen at 10 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 2.  Your virtual hometown library is always open at www.guilpl.org.
