Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, February 4, 2015

Hear highlights from the Great American Songbook — such as classics from Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and Richard Rodgers — when you come to Guilderland Public Library’s Second Sunday Concert on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m.

Our featured artist is the Roger Held Trio, renowned throughout the Capital District for their thematic stylings.

Take Your Child to the

Library Day

On Saturday, Feb. 7, Take Your Child to the Library Day, GPL is holding two programs especially for our younger customers: Social Robotics and Maple Sugaring.

At Social Robotics at 11 a.m., Jennifer Goodall and her team from the University at Albany will teach children about all the different ways that robots help people every day. Then kids will be able to design their own robot. Who knows — the next great inventor may be among the crowd. This two-hour program is for ages eight and up. Please call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register.

At 2 p.m., kids’ attention will turn to Maple Sugaring with Anita Sanchez, a fun, family oriented program that explains the magic of maple syrup. It doesn’t matter how old you are, everyone loves the taste of maple syrup. But why does a tree taste so sweet? Children will learn how trees work, why sugar is so important and — best of all — get a taste of real maple syrup. This program is for children pre-kindergarten to grade four.  Please call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register.

Presidents’ Day Weekend

GPL will be closed Presidents’ Day weekend — Saturday, Feb. 14 through Monday, Feb. 16 —and will open at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The Hot Stove League

Baseball talk in the off-season is one way to forget about snow, gray skies, and football controversy. Baseballs are always the right pressure, so come to The Hot Stove League session on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 6:30 p.m., and enjoy a little freewheeling discussion.

The conversation will be started by Tim Wiles, former Director of Research for the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. And then the back-and-forth is up to you.

We had so much fun last month, we're doing it again.

“That’s right,

Mr. Peabody!”

Enjoy the time-travelling magic that only Mr. Peabody’s “WABAC” (pronounced “Wayback”) Machine creates when you bring the kids to GPL on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., to see the big-screen adventures of Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The movie is rated PG and runs just over 90 minutes. Popcorn will be served.
