Musical story time
Join us on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. for a musical story time. This popular program includes music, movement, stories, rhymes and fun activities. Toddlers through kindergarteners with an adult will thoroughly enjoy this age appropriate morning song and dance time.
November artist of the month
The library is delighted to welcome local favorite Nancy Gardner. Gardner’s work can be pre-viewed at floppypoppy.com. Please drop by the library and stroll through the gallery, so you can enjoy her photographs in person!
Mother-daughter book discussion
On Thursday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m., author Kate Messner will join us via Skype for a mother-daughter book discussion of her novel The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z. Messner will start with a quick introduction and overview of her books as well as a little about the writing process for The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z with some show and tell of revised pages. Then Messner will open it up to questions. Please prepare one or two questions for the author before the program. This program is recommended for girls in grades 5 to 7 and their mothers. Please register for this program and pick up a copy of the book. Space is limited, so register early.

The library will be having a special Halloween preschool story time on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 10:15 a.m. Dress up in your favorite costume and stop by for a story, some scary good treats and maybe even a parade through the library. This is a theme-based, multi-age level story time with an emphasis on early literacy. Please register for this special program by calling the library.

On Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m., we will be welcoming Erik Schlimmer, hiker and founder of the Trans Adirondack Route. Erik will give a presentation highlighting the history, ecology and preservation of the Adirondack Park, as well as photographs of his personal trek traversing the entire park. His guidebook and maps will also be available, so you can follow his footsteps across the largest park in the United States.

Be sure to stop in and admire the works of our October artist of the month, Barbara Meilinger. She has graciously agreed to display her incredible quilt collection. If you love beautiful handiwork, you won’t want to miss this.
Also, if you didn’t have a chance to see the miniatures display by Ivan Lawson, you’re in luck. Ivan has allowed the library to continue his display through October. We have had many visitors who’ve traveled expressly to admire this incredible talent. We are so pleased to be able to extend this exhibit for those who haven’t had a chance to stop by.
Are you a hiking enthusiast? Then the Voorheesville Public Library has 2 upcoming programs that you will nott want to miss!
On Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., the library will be hosting author Alan Via and his dog, Bookah. Alan has led hikes for the Adirondack Mt Club, Catskill 3500 Club, Appalachian Mountain Club, and Taconic Hiking Club for 35 years. He was Albany ADK's Outings Chair for 14 years and currently an ADK main club committee Chair for 24 years. He's a 'regular' and winter 46er and 35er, Northeast 111 completer and has hiked all over the western and Canadian mountains. He is only one of a small handful of hikers to have hiked all the Adirondack and Catskill 100 highest peak, the latter with his Lab, Bookah, who will be joining us.
The Adirondack Mt Club published Via’s book, The Catskill 67 - A Hiker's Guide to the Catskill 100 Highest Peaks under 3500' in 2012 and the Schenectady Gazette named it one of the top 10 new books of 2012. The hiking guide has color photos and maps, and Via will be sharing additional photos from the photographers who contributed to the book. He enjoys engaging the audience with stories and tales of his hikes.
The theme of the presentation is Catskill 100 highest mountains, where they are, and how they are unique. His presentation is an introduction for hikers and other mountain enthusiasts to a range of peaks largely unknown to the public. There will be time for questions and book signing after the program.
For our second hiking program, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m., we will be welcoming Erik Schlimmer, hiker and founder of the Trans-Adirondack Route. Schlimmer designs sustainable trails for federal, state, and private agencies. He will give a presentation highlighting the history, ecology and preservation of the Adirondack Park, as well as photographs of his personal trek traversing the entire park. The Trans-Adirondack Route is 235 miles long and climbs 25,000 vertical feet from end-to-end. It begins in Ellenburg Center, NY, just nine miles from Canada, and ends near the small settlement of Lassellsville, N. Y. Some highlights of the route include Whiteface Mountain, the Cold River, the Cedar River, Long Lake, Catamount Mountain, and the High Peaks. His guidebook and maps will also be available, so you can follow his footsteps across the largest park in the United States.
Book sale success
The library wanted to send out a big thank you to the entire community. Our annual fall book sale was a huge success this year, because of all of the used books, cd’s and dvd’s so generously donated by our neighbors. A special thanks to all of the volunteers who tirelessly worked to sort and box and stack countless items. Also, day after day. And a heartfelt thank you to FOL President, Sherry Burgoon, for her above and beyond efforts that made this the best book sale ever.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 11a.m., Dudley Observatory’s Starlab brings astronomy alive. Starlab is a portable planetarium. All it needs is enthusiastic sky-gazers to enjoy the 3-D experience of this interactive planetarium program. Space inside the Starlab is limited, so please register early. This program is for kids in kindergarten through grade 4.
Artist of the month
The next time you are visiting the library, be sure to stroll the hall art gallery to admire the oil paintings of local artist Susie Flansburg, the September artist of the month. Flansburg has been a Voorheesville resident since 1952. She started painting later in life and credits her accomplishments as an artist to her mentors and friends, Louis Pelky and Ruth Cawley. Our September display case is filled with miniatures, shared by Rose Lawson. With every visit, you’ll notice something new.

It is that time of the year again. The Friends of the Library’s annual fall book sale is right around the corner. The sale starts onFriday, Sept. 20, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. for the members only preview sale. A one year individual FOL membership can be purchased at the door for the low cost of $10. Then on Saturday, Sept. 21, the public book sale will take place. Finally, on Sunday, Sept. 22, we will have the Buck-A-Bag Sale (byo bags).

On Monday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m., join in for an evening of educational fun as Jeff Boyer explains “green” energy sources of the future.
The 2013 Summer Reading Program ends with the announcement of grand-prize winners and distribution of prizes to top readers in each age category.
Starlab
On Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 11:00 a.m., Starlab brings astronomy alive!
The Dudley Observatory Starlab is a portable planetarium. All it needs is enthusiastic sky-gazers to enjoy the 3-D experience of this interactive planetarium program. Space inside the Starlab is limited, so please register early.
The program is for children in kindergarten through fourth grades.
Museum passes
Are your kids bored yet? Borrow one of our museum passes and take them on a road trip.
Drive over to Hancock Shaker Village or check out the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. The Berkshire Botannical Gardens are always lovely and the Bennington Museum is a fun day trip.

August Artist of the Month
This is the last week to enjoy works by our August Artist of the Month, Diane Wozniak.
The library is pleased to display some of this well-known and much-loved area artist’s outstanding artwork. She enjoys painting watercolor scenes of Voorheesville and often has them made into note cards and matted prints to sell.
Since she grew up in Voorheesville, many of the scenes are near and dear to her heart.
