Meet author James Preller
Students in grades three and up, you don’t want to miss this author visit. Local author James Preller will be a making a personal visit to the library on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10:30 a.m. Get ready for a fun-filled, scary morning when he presents an overview of his books and leads an open discussion of his series Scary Tales. Books will be available for purchase and the author will be on hand for book signing. While you’re here, be sure to fill out a card for the Winter Reading Club drawing. You will be eligible to win signed copies of Home Sweet Horror and I Scream, You Scream by James Preller. The drawing will take place at the end of the program.

Mark your calendars for the Nimblefingers annual open house. Join the Nimblefingers ladies on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m., for an afternoon of demonstrations, refreshments and friendship. Meet people who love to talk about crafting and have lots of tips and experiences to share. If you can’t make it on the fourth for the open house, be sure to stop by the library before Feb. 28 to see the wonderful gallery and display case exhibit these talented ladies have put together for your enjoyment. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite design in the Nimblefingers Table Runner challenge.

Bookworm changes
After more than 30 years, the library’s newsletter The Bookworm is changing. In trying to do our small part in maintaining a clean, sustainable community, The Bookworm will no longer be automatically mailed to every resident of the Voorheesville Central School District. During 2014, the library will transition from snail mail to electronic distribution. There will still be paper copies available for mailing, but you’ll need to let us know if you want one. The first two issues, January/February/March and April/May, will be mailed to every resident. But, beginning in June, the easiest way to find a newsletter will be online. For an online version, the library website, www.voorheesvillelibrary.org, will have The Bookworm link. To receive the newsletter by e-mail, or to continue to receive a paper copy, go to the library updates page and sign up. Kid’s book discussion
On Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m, all students in grades two and three are invited to join us as we discuss Smasher by Dick King-Smith. Smasher is a dog who’s always getting into trouble. Can farmer Buzzard find a way to save him or is Smasher in the doghouse for good? Register and pick up a copy of the book at the library.

Artist of the month
Our December Artist is Jean Mackay. For more than 20 years Jean has used art as a way to study nature and to share its beauty and diversity with others. Many of her watercolors follow the traditional illustrative style of the 18th and 19th centuries naturalist-explorers who documented the rich variety of plants and animals found in newly discovered lands. Instead of revealing new species, Mackay’s journals and paintings aim to help people see anew and appreciate both the remarkable species and ordinary things we encounter close to home. Jean will be hosting a reception on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 3 to 4:45 p.m. Please be sure to stop by and enjoy some light refreshments with the artist.

When asked about her recent skype author visit and the role that the Friends of the Voorheesville Public Library played in making that a reality, youth services librarian Gail Brown had this to say: “I would like to extend a great big thank you to the Voorheesville Friends of the Library for funding a well-received special reading event. New York State author, Kate Messner, visited the library via Skype for a mother-daughter book discussion of one of her books. Kate was a warm and engaging presenter who discussed her writing process and the ins and outs of publishing. She was delightful!
Mrs. Brown continued “I would not have been able to coordinate this program without the monetary help for book purchases and the author’s fee generously provided by the Friends of the Library. I am grateful for all the support this organization gives toward programs and services for youth and families.”
Tumblebooks
The library now offers TumbleBooks, digital animated, talking picture books that help parents and kids share the joy of reading together at home or on the go. Users of iPads, tablets, smart phones, or computers can connect through our website, www.voorheesvillelibrary.org, to the TumbleBooks elibrary, a collection of over 300 fiction and nonfiction ebooks.
TumbleBooks are based on print titles, with added features such as animation, sounds, music, and narration, transforming the book into an electronic picture or chapter book. The collection also offers read-alongs, puzzles and games, language learning, and short videos.
