Blue vase in a blue room: The colors in a bouquet of flowers — lilacs and lies among them — harmonizes with the colors in the quilt hung from the mantle at the Schoharie Library. The “Quilts in Bloom” show runs from June 4 to 17 at the library.

The Schoharie Library will burst into bloom with a garden of quilts and flowers for the upcoming show “Quilts in Bloom.” Quilts and wall hangings by the Schoharie Valley Piecemakers and other local quilters will be on display from June 4 to 17. The Schoharie Valley Garden Club will decorate the library with coordinating flower arrangements from June 7 to 10. The public is invited to visit during library hours, and to take special photos in this unique and beautiful venue.

The library will host several special events during “Quilts in Bloom”:

— Friday, June 7, at 3:30 p.m., “Make a Tabletop Planter”: Fabric piecing and gardening transform a can into a pretty pot of flowers or herbs. All materials will be provided;

— Saturday, June 8, at 11:30 a.m., “Growing Roses” with herbalist and quilter Betty Fikes Pillsbury;

— Saturday, June 8, from noon to 2 p.m.: Tea Party with a variety of  home-baked treats. Guests are welcome to wear flower hats if they wish; and

— Tuesday, June 11, at 3:30 p.m., “Make a Quilt Square”: Learn from a quilter! Fabric is available at the library for a sewn square or a card or collage on heavy paper.

The Schoharie Valley Garden Club was founded in 1947, and is dedicated to education, conservation, and the beautification of public spaces in the area through gardening, including the planters in front of the Schoharie Library.

Members further their knowledge of gardening, sponsor a scholarship program for agriculture and nature education for young people, run the “Garden of the Month” program, participate in the “Festival of Trees” at the New York Power Authority, contribute to low-income water projects, and participate in other gardening and community service activities. The club is a member of the Central Atlantic Region of National Garden Clubs Inc., and of the 3rd District of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State.

The Schoharie Valley Piecemakers Quilt Guild was formed in 1986 “to further the art of quilting.” Many members have been inducted into the Catskill Mountain Quilters’ Hall of Fame. In the spirit of the “quilting bee,” the group also pools their talents to support numerous community and individual needs by making and donating various quilted items, such as small and large quilts, bibs, placemats, and wall hangings, including the ones in the Schoharie Library.

The Schoharie Valley Piecemakers is also a main member of the larger regional co-op of guilds that sponsors the Empire Quilt Fest, held every other year in the New York capital area.

The Flower and Quilt Show, Make a Fabric Planter, Growing Roses, Tea Party, and Make a Quilt Square are free and open to people of all ages. Library hours are Monday and Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m.; Tuesday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kathy Hill Brown will read from and talk about her book, “The Summer Girl,” at the Schoharie Library on Tuesday, April 30, at 3:30 p.m.

“The Summer Girl” follows the adventures of Ruthie, a Jewish girl from Brooklyn, and Sonia, a local girl, as they investigate the crumbling ruins of once-majestic spa hotels.

What mysteries linger in the old hotels around a small spa town in upstate New York? Author Kathy Hill Brown will visit the Schoharie Library on Tuesday, April 30, at 3:30 p.m. to read from and talk about her novel, “The Summer Girl.”

This book follows the adventures of Ruthie, a Jewish girl from Brooklyn, and Sonia, a local girl, as they investigate the crumbling ruins of once-majestic spa hotels.

Ms. Brown lived in Sharon Springs for several years as a child, and the book’s setting was inspired by the town. She remembers peering in the windows of some of the abandoned hotels, seeing what was left behind, and imagining what they had looked like in their heyday.

Every summer, she saw the Hasidic Jewish families arriving from New York City, and hoped one of the children might become a playmate. At that time, the summer visitors and locals rarely mingled, so she never had the opportunity to make friends as Sonia and Ruthie did. As an adult, she wondered, “What if...?” and the story began to take form.

On Tuesday, Ms. Brown of Berne, a former Altamont enterprise reporter, will share stories of the fascinating historical background to her book, as well as pictures of some of the hotels. She will also have books available to sign.

This event is part of Children’s Book Week. It is free of charge and all ages are welcome. The Schoharie Library is located at 103 Knower Avenue in Schoharie.
