Please take advantage of the Yellow Bus program for, as you might drive now (99 percent of those seniors who ride with us do), there may come a time you can’t drive. There is an old saying, “use it or lose it.” We hope we will always have this program for our New Scotland seniors but the town board must see this.
Remember, we do the reservations, make arrangements for special tours, and you get dropped off at the venue door so there are no parking issues. You may bring a walker or an aid (like a daughter or a son) if you need it. We make it as easy, painless, and enjoyable as possible. You might even see an old friend or make a new one.
So please join us and pass the word to a friend or neighbor and get on the bus.

The town of New Scotland has two cars to take seniors living in New Scotland only, to medical appointments, Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This program runs with volunteer drivers and money donations from riders. No fee is charged; a donation is suggested of $5 each way for out-of-town trips and a few dollars each way within town. If you don’t have the means, you will never be denied a ride. Amounts are only suggestions.
Please give as much notice as possible so we can schedule and find a volunteer to drive you. Dialysis and chemotherapy appointments take precedent over all other appointments. This is a curb-to-curb service. The program is run at the discretion of the Senior Outreach Liaison and the program committee.

If schools are closed because of inclement weather, all trips are cancelled. Money for events will be refunded if possible.

Activities include: Iroquois social dancers, special children’s activities, silent auction, chicken barbeque, Iroquois stories around the bonfire, lantern lighting, and more. Did you know that Rensselaerville and Westerlo residents have access to a Senior Bus? It makes weekly trips (usually on Thursday) to grocery stores, and occasional forays to dens of iniquity for penny slot machines and other games of chance.

An addition to the Guardian Society’s fall calendar is coming on Nov. 30 from 9 to 11 a.m. They will be presenting a free program on brain health.
Research suggests that lifestyle may have a much more significant impact on brain health than was previously thought. The combination of good nutrition, physical activity, mental stimulation, not smoking, and a varied social network all contribute to improved brain functioning.
The presenters will be Richard Holub, M.D., and John A. Fairbank, P.A., from Neurological Associates of Albany. Come and learn some specific things you can do to improve your brain.

Speaking of brains, I was reading a book today called “The Autistic Brain,” and was once again struck by the concept that human behavior seems to have as many degrees of variation as hair color. Just like you can have hair colors from platinum through red to jet black, we can have degrees of sociability, or shyness, or aggression.
Even severe conditions like “multiple personality” (known to the shrinks as Dissociative Identity Disorder), could be seen as an extreme example of normal behavior. You’re not the same person with your grandmother or auntie as you are with your American Legion buddies or closest girlfriend, but that’s normal because it’s the same recognizable “you” underneath, and you can control the changes.
Take one more step down that line, and those different aspects get separated, and can’t communicate with each other. It seems to me that, in many cases (not all, of course), it’s a matter of degree rather than kind.
When I was much younger, I believed that insanity might be caused by oversensitivity; I thought that perhaps some people went crazy because they couldn’t filter out enough of the environmental noise and stimuli we all get exposed to.
The book’s author, Temple Grandin, mentions that overstimulation is a problem experienced by some autistic people. Dr. Grandin (she has a Ph.D.) is herself autistic, which makes her perspective fairly unique.
She has specialized in designing livestock-handling equipment and structures for meat processors (yes, that’s an intentional euphemism), based on her own life experiences as an autistic person. It seems we keep finding more and more biology behind our psychology. Maybe some day we will be able to adjust the brain-chemistry imbalances that cause some folks so much trouble.

Tai Chi lessons
We’ve had a ton of interest in our Tai Chi classes, so sign up for them now. Tai Chi chuan (often simply called Tai Chi) is a form of Chinese martial arts used not for fighting but to encourage mental and physical relaxation. Please join us on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. from June 17 to July 22, for a series of free Tai Chi classes with Kyoshi Joe Mansfield. Prior experience is not necessary. All ability levels are welcome. Please stop by or call the library at 861-7239 to register in advance.

Father’s Day is coming up. Please join us on Thursday, June 18, at 4 p.m., to make a Father’s Day card that your dad or grandpa is sure to love. We’ll have all the materials you need to make a unique handcrafted gift for your favorite guy.

Get your tickets now for our ever-popular chicken barbecue, with servings at 5 and 6 p.m., on Friday June 19. Every ticket gets you a dinner, which includes a half chicken, baked potato, coleslaw, roll, drink, and brownie. There’s also a vegetarian option is available for pre-order, if you prefer. Running the River Concert
Join us for the first of six free concerts in Orsini Park on consecutive Tuesdays through August 11. First up on Tuesday June 30, at 7 p.m., Running the River, a band whose unique blend of classic country, rock, folk, Irish, blues, and fiddle tunes provides entertainment for all.

If schools are closed because of weather, all trips are cancelled. Money for events will be refunded if possible.
