Two new creative support groups will be forming at the Westerlo Public Library and we’re looking for members.
The Artists’ Group will provide support to its members’ work and growth as artists — beginner or professional. It’s about encouraging creativity, not critique. It is not about competition, shows, or sales.
The Memoir Writing Group will provide its members a safe place to learn together with people that are accepting and supportive. The group is about creating, not criticism. It is about the practice of remembering and writing. It is not about publishing, polishing, or picking out the problems.
Both of these new groups will be led by Lila Hollister Smith. Smith is a founding member of the Capital District Textile Artists group and leads the library’s quilting group. She also teaches, gives trunk shows, talks, and exhibits in art galleries.
The library is a great place to meet like-minded individuals. If you are interested in joining any of these groups, please contact the library.

Angus will be back at the Westerlo Public Library this Friday, Oct. 16, from 5 to 6 p.m. (new time). Contact the library to register your child for a 15-minute reading session, or just drop in to “Check it out!” (Librarians love saying, “check it out”).
If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud or reluctant to read at all, he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental, the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Another benefit is the joy children get from being around a dog. Angus is a registered therapy dog. Our thanks to Laura Tenney for volunteering her time and sharing Angus with us.

Display case
For the month of October the library is displaying Ruth Savino’s Coca-Cola collectibles.
From its invention by John S. Pemberton in 1886, Coca-Cola has become a staple of American culture. Even in 1886, Pemberton spent more money on ads than he made in sales, producing dozens of signs and other promotional items. All bore the immediately recognizable logo and, in some form or another, the classic red-and-white color scheme.
Her collection includes vintage green classic “Coke” bottles, along with collectible tins, trays, salt & pepper sets – and more. The centerpiece is a 1950s “Fountain Service” sign from Jiggs Service Station.

The library book discussion group will meet on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m., at the library. We will discuss “Ordinary Grace” by William Kent Krueger. This book is the moving account of a boy standing at the door of young manhood, discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God. Please join us. New members are welcome.

The girls have already done quite a bit to help us make our new program room more useful and more comfortable. Two portable storage bins for children’s craft supplies were donated, artwork that they created themselves has been hung, and flowers were planted outside.
The girls are also volunteering their time helping with children’s programs. The Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. It is earned with courage, confidence, and character, and making a difference in the world around you. Thank you, Girls.
