Westerlo Library Notes for Wednesday, May 5, 2021

The Westerlo Library Board of Trustees is holding its May meeting virtually on GoToMeeting on May 10 at 7 p.m. You can find the link to the meeting on our website (westerlolibrary.org). The monthly trustee meetings are open to the public.

Succession gardening

The library has a new program. Try a succession garden. We have seed kits and instructions for a 4-by-8-foot garden bed. There are limited quantities, so get yours soon!

STEAM Kits

We have free STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) take and make kits available at our library. April’s theme is “Plant Science” —  there are new kits available weekly.

Book Club

The book club has chosen two books for May. “Paradise on the Hudson” by Caroline Seebohm is about the garden created by Samuel Untermyer in Yonkers. The garden attracted thousands of visitors and later fell into disrepair and was revived in the 1990s.

“The Hidden Life of Trees (What they Feel, How they Communicate, Discoveries from a Secret World)” by Peter Wohlleben. Peter Wohlleben is a German forester who writes on ecological themes. The next meeting is May 20 at 6 p.m. Weather permitting we will meet on the patio at the library (masked and socially distanced).

Spice Take and Make

The spice for May is parsley. Pick up a sample of parsley and three recipes.

Share your thoughts on the recipes with us at our Monthly Spice Club Meeting on May 25 at 6 p.m. (the meeting link is on the library  website, westerlolibrary.org). This month’s recipes are Easy Chimichurri Sauce, Israeli Salad with Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Onions and Parsley, and Mushroom and Garlic Spaghetti Dinner.
