Westerlo Library Notes for Friday, January 6, 2017

The Westerlo Board of Library Trustees will meet on Monday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. at the library.  This is an open public meeting.

Read to Lefty

Please join us in welcoming Lefty to the library family. Lefty will be at the library next Friday, Jan. 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud or reluctant to read at all, he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental, the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Another benefit is the joy children get from simply being around a dog.

Lefty is a registered therapy dog. Our thanks to Eric Markson for volunteering his time and sharing Lefty with us.

New: Flipster!

Beginning in January digital magazines will no longer be available through OverDrive. We are offering a new service, Flipster! through the Upper Hudson Library System. It’s easy. All you need is your library card to access over 60 of your favorite magazine titles. Click on the link on our website or at uhls.org to download magazines to your phone, tablet or computer.

After school

Join Miss Lee on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for homework help, games, crafts, puzzles, music and a lot more! Programs will also include storytelling, hands-on demonstrations, and visits from special guests. Lee is also available on Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m. for homework help.

Story time

From 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday mornings Miss Lee presents stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to 5 years old. In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Story times are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.

Technology Walk-In Wednesdays

Do you have a new smartphone or tablet, but don’t know how to download e-books?  Need to brush up on your computer skills – or obtain basic skills?  See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one instruction.

Family Game Night

Drop in on Thursdays between 5 and 8 p.m.  Try one of our board games – or bring your own.  This unstructured program is open to all ages and you need not be accompanied by a child to participate!
