Join us on Monday, April 3 at 7 p.m. for a look at racism in the United SsWe will discuss the key rights established by court rulings and legislation, and we will examine those rights in operation.

Issues will be addressed in their historical context, and the workings of the legal system will be explored. The program will be led by Stephan Haimowitz (JD, Rutgers University, 1975) who has worked on a broad range of civil rights matters. All are welcome!

A trip to Asia in a cup

Join us on Tuesday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m., as we embark on a tour of the different expressions of the tea plant while learning how to brew whole leaf teas. Explore and taste the different production styles of tea:  white, green, oolong, black, and pu-erh.

Come ready to experience tea in its purest form as we explore what the craftsmanship of man can produce from simply a bud and a leaf. Presented by Hayley Stevens Miller, managing partner of Saratoga Tea and Honey.

Candling the Eggs

The Voorheesville Public Library is excited to host an egg incubator where we will watch real chicks hatch. The incubator has been in the library since March 29.

Educator, naturalist, and chicken expert George Steele, returns to candle the eggs on Saturday, April 8, at 10:30 a.m., exactly nine days after setting them in the incubator.

What has happened inside the egg? How have the chicks developed? What fascinating things can we see inside the egg? Join us for an educational morning as we await the arrival of the chicks during Spring break. All ages welcome.

On Saturday, March 18 at 10:30 a.m., the Capital District Child Care Council will guide parents/caregivers and their children in engaging early learning activities that will help them to play, grow and discover.  

Race and the Constitution

As part of our ongoing Diversity Series, please join us on Monday, March 20 at 7 p.m, for Racism by Law – From Chattel Slavery to “Separate but Equal.” This program, the first of five in the coming weeks, will look at racism in the U.S. as a sequence of legal problems. How Essential Oils Can Improve Our Lifestyle

Come to a workshop on Tuesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m., and you’ll understand what all the talk is about. Throughout this hour, you will be able to enjoy the aromas of various oils, apply oils topically and even taste the oils if you would like. Come join us for this wonderful education.

Books and Beyond Book Club

If you’d like to participate in a book club, but can’t attend the evening meeting, this newly formed group is for you. We will be meeting at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22. You can join by registering online or in person and picking up a copy of the book, “The Paris Architect” by Charles Belfoure, at the information desk.

Irish folk music

Singer-guitar player Tim O’Shea, traveling on a US tour from Ireland, will be stopping in Voorheesville to perform traditional Irish folk music on Wednesday, March 22. Preceding his performance with the duo Drank the Gold, O’Shea and fiddler Oona Grady will give a 30 minute talk and demonstration covering the elements of Irish music. If you love Irish music played with passion and fervor you’ll love this performance.  Come in, take a seat, and surround yourself with the spirit of the people of Ireland. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m.

Beading workshop

Adults and teens ages 14 and up are invited to learn easy beading techniques on Tuesday, March 28.  The library provides tools and offers a variety of beads to choose from. Check out our beading books and magazines for inspiration. The class runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m., but you may arrive at any time during the workshop that fits your schedule. There will be a small materials fee, depending upon your project choice.

The Capital District Child Care Council will present a workshop at the Voorheesville Public Library on Saturday, March 4, at 10:30 a.m., to show parents how play supports all children’s developmental learning needs — social, emotional, physical and cognitive — and how parents can best support their child’s play.

We’ll talk about how the tubes work, look at different browsers, study the basic construction of a webpage, explore a handful of search engines, briefly talk security, and along the way pick up some useful search tips.

Participants can bring their own devices, or use one of the library’s laptops. The first class will start at 10 a.m. and the second class will begin at 6 p.m. Please register for one session only, as space is very limited.

A presentation, on Monday, March 6, will benefit senior citizens and those concerned about senior citizens. At 1:30 p.m., Mark Brody, a past Principal Attorney in the Office of the New York State Attorney General’s office, will discuss powers of attorney, trusts, living wills and health care proxies. There will be ample time for questions.

Discover tea and tea tasting

As part of our Foodie Series, please join us as we welcome tea ambassador Matthew, from Short and Stout Tea in Guilderland, on Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. Matthew will lead our discussion on what tea is, tea history, and how tea is brewed. And, of course, there will be tea tasting.

Reading and Robots

Wondering what to do with your first through third grade students on their days off ?

Bring them to the library on Friday, March 10, at 1:30 p.m. to hear some robot stories and program our tiny robots. The library’s Ozobots are easy to program using just magic markers, once you know their secret code.

Movie

Lincoln Center Local partners with the library to bring exclusive free screenings of Lincoln Center’s finest performances directly to our neighborhood. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, the library will be showing “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” which was recorded at Avery Fisher Hall in 2014

Murder, mayhem, and the ultimate revenge — Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece returns to life in a bold new performance by The New York Philharmonic, starring Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson. This program contains language or scenes that some may find objectionable. Viewer discretion is advised.

We’re holding a special storytime Pajama Twilight Tales for our youngest readers, ages 18 months to 5 years, to celebrate your family’s progress toward reading 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. On Friday, Feb. 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., put on your pajamas and join us at the library. Bring along your favorite bedtime friend (stuffed animal or doll) and join us for snuggle time stories, quiet songs, a bedtime snack, and sleepy time fun. The library will be closed except for the children and their families.

Nimblefingers open house

February is Nimblefingers month at the library. Whether you do crafts yourself or just have an appreciation for textile arts, come for an afternoon of fun and friendship on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. Even if you can’t come for the afternoon, be sure to drop in at some point during February to stroll through the gallery and community room to enjoy the wonderful crafts these ladies have displayed for your pleasure. No need to register.

Coding with LEGO

You can learn how to “program” your minifig to navigate a LEGO maze using paper codes to give instructions. Caregivers of students in kindergarten through grade two will serve as assistant programmers on Monday, Feb. 20 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

STEAM

Students in grades three through six are invited to try out the Library’s new STEAM Tools on Monday, Feb. 20 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Program the Ozobots using marker codes or Ozoblockly. Use the littleBits electronic sets to build an invention with your friends. See the Cubify 3D printer in action.

Family storytime

Who doesn’t like a nice stack of steaming, buttery, syrupy pancakes on a cold winter morning? Children ages 3 thru grade two, and their families are invited to join the fun on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m., as we read pancake stories, participate in pancake themed activities, and, of course, eat pancakes.

Kids’ movie matinee

Join us on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. for a delightful tale about the adventures of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who happens to be a dragon. Refreshments will be served. This movie is rated PG, and is 103 minutes long. No need to register.

Starting seedlings indoors

It's almost time to start your garden seedlings indoors. Join local gardener Sharon Miller at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 to discuss when to start different kinds of vegetable seeds indoors. Learn about indoor lighting and heating equipment that you can use to start your garden. Choose seeds from the library's seed collection and start planting now. No need to register.

Mason Jar Mixers

Make sure to leave yourself plenty of time for this program, as you will probably want to make more than one. On Sunday, Feb. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m., you can create a mason jar edible gift. Choose from hot cocoa mix, cookie mix, or a hearty soup mix. Once you have the technique down, making these at home will be a snap.

Adult coloring book club

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m., we will provide a quiet, relaxing atmosphere for you to enjoy some me time. We have a large selection of coloring supplies, some relaxing music and different coloring sheets for you to choose from.

Calling all pirates and princesses! Come celebrate “Take Your Child to the Library Day” on Saturday, Feb. 4. Our special dress-up storytime event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is especially for children ages 3 to 7, with families. After reading some great pirate and princess themed books, we will have “tea” and snacks fit for royalty and buccaneers alike. Don’t leave without making your pirate hat or fairy wand or you might be asked to walk the plank or face a fiery dragon! Registration is requested.

Author visit and book discussion

The library is very excited to welcome author Eric Luper, who will visit us on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Eric will chat with participants about his book “Key Hunters; The Mysterious Moonstone.” Students in grades two to five should register early and pick up a copy of the book from the library reference desk.

Parenting styles and discipline tools

As a parent/caregiver of a preschooler, do you ever wonder how your parenting style might affect you and your child? On Saturday, Feb. 5 at 3 p.m., Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer an educational program to help parents/caregivers understand four different parenting styles and how their particular parenting behavior affects their children. Parents/caregivers will also learn several discipline techniques to use with their children, including understanding the difference between punishment and discipline, the myths of spanking, and getting children to listen.

On-site childcare in the children’s area of the library will be available for children ages 18 months to 5 years (register early – maximum number of registrants will be no more than 12). Free screening

The library is very excited to invite you to the first of our Lincoln Center Local: Free Screenings. “Act One,” starring Tony Shalhoub, will be shown at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15. A play written and directed by James Lapine, adapted from the 1959 autobiography by Moss Hart, and filmed at Lincoln Center Theater, “Act One” provides an insight into early 20th Century immigrant life in New York City. Poverty, severe living conditions, limited job opportunities with a backdrop of Broadway during one of its most prosperous periods, all intersect to create an atmosphere in which Moss Hart launched his theatrical career.

Lincoln Center Local: Free Screenings is a program created by Lincoln Center Education and hosted by libraries and community centers. It brings the best of Lincoln Center off its Manhattan-based campus and into communities anywhere. Holiday donation drive

We had a very successful holiday donation drive this year. Thanks to everyone who joined library staff in donating personal care and pet care items. A special thank you to the New Scotland Food Pantry volunteers, who work year-round to insure there is always help available to our neighbors in need.

Fine free days

Start looking for those overdue items now. Overdue Voorheesville Public Library items returned between Monday, Jan. 9 and Sunday, Jan. 15 will be granted amnesty. Sorry, but items from other libraries are not included in this offer.

Holiday hours

In observance of the New Year, the library will close at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, and will re-open at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

 

Join us at the Voorheesville Public Library on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. for our Adult Coloring Book Club. Each month we will provide different coloring sheets with multiple pages to choose from as well as a large selection of colored pencils, markers, and crayons.

The library community room will provide a welcoming environment with soothing music to help you relax and enjoy some you time. Supplies will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own.  

Winter family story time

Why not join Miss Amy for a morning of snow much fun? Register now for a Tuesday, Dec. 27 family story time. Our program, for preschool through grade two children and their families, starts at 10:15 a.m., when we warm up with some good books and a snow-themed craft, followed by hot chocolate and a yummy snack.

Kids’ movie matinee

Drop in on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 1:30 p.m. for our afternoon matinee. The friendly but forgetful blue tang fish begins a search for her long-lost parents, and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.

Light refreshments will be served. No registration needed. The movie is 95 minutes and it’s rated PG

Lego building

Drop in between 10:30 a.m. and noon on Thursday, Dec. 29 for Lego fun. We’ve got bricks for all ages and stages, toddlers to tweens. Everyone is welcome, No registration needed.

Teen time

Friday, Dec. 30, is all about teens. From 2 to 3:30 p.m., middle and high schoolers are welcome to hang out together, play geeky games, or make something, whether high-tech or low-tech. Use the Leap Motion, the 3D scanner or 3D printer with our laptops.

Soccer insights

Join us on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. as Jack Bell, senior media specialist for the North American Soccer League and Erin Sullivan, men's soccer coach at Williams College discuss the ins and outs of the game. They will answer your questions — about the game, the players and anything else soccer-related—from both professional and college points of view. We are honored to bring these two soccer experts to the library and have them share their perspectives and experience.

Cookie swap party

Dress to impress in your holiday worst. Wear your ugly sweater to the party on Sunday, Dec. 11. Join us at 2 p.m. for a holiday cookie exchange. Please bring 2 dozen homemade cookies to exchange along with the recipe to share with others. Containers will be provided. Music will be playing as we decorate ugly sweater cookies, color ugly sweater coloring pages, and much more. A prize will be given for the ugliest sweater. Light refreshments will be served.

Creativity lab

Students in grade three to five can spend your afternoon off creating with chocolate, candy coating, and other tasty tidbits. On Wednesday, December 14 at 1:30 p.m., we will decorate pretzels to look like candles, then you can combine your favorite ingredients to make custom-designed bark. Both would make great holiday presents. 

Ozoblockly

Spend an hour on Saturday, Dec. 10, learning computer science coding with the help of our Ozobot bit robots. The robots can be programmed using a customized version of Blockly, a simple-to-use block-based programming editor.

This event is open to tweens, teens and adults. There will be two sessions available. The first will run from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the second will run from noon to 1 p.m. Please only register for one program, as space is very limited.
