Voorheesville Library Notes for Wednesday, August 28, 2019

Dorothy Bremer Kohler, pictured in 1948 when she graduated from the Gilboa-Conesville School, will give a short reading from, and sign copies of, her new book of personal essays “Stories of a Life: Remembering Friends and Family” at the Voorheesville Public Library on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. She addresses her family’s immigration from Germany in the 1920s as well as her upbringing in the small town of Gilboa. For five years, Kohler has been a member of the library’s memoir group “Writing Personal History for Family, Friends, and Posterity.” The book, printed by The Troy Book Makers, was edited by the shepherd of the memoir group, Dennis Sullivan, who says, “The collection reflects Dorothy’s wry sense of humor as well as her seriousness in tackling the tragedies that afflicted her family in days gone by, including the beloved family dog Schultz.” The stories, Sullivan says in the book’s forward, “remind us of what Thornton Wilder was trying to convey in Grover’s Corners in his American classic ‘Our Town,’” and reflect “what the Nobel Laureate, Czeslaw Milosz, called the double vision of a poet,” seeing the world from above while being an active part of it..” Sullivan concludes, “Though the stories are steeped in locality, they contain ‘lessons’ applicable to people everywhere. The writing is crisp and lively.”

In Observance of Labor Day, the Voorheesville Public Library will be closed from Saturday, Aug. 31. through Monday, Sept. 2. Regular hours will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
