Voorheesville Library Notes for Wednesday, May 11, 2022

Reading is fundamental, and here at the Voorheesville Public Library, we want to make sure that all students maintain their reading skills over summer vacation. Visit our website to create an account to track your summer reading progress beginning on June 1.

There will be incentives to keep participants recording their progress through Friday, Aug. 12. We’re also planning a variety of summer activities for all ages, in the library and out in the community too. Check our online calendar for details and registration.

Free concert

Join us at the library at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 14 for a free indoor concert with “Standard Time Trio”. Music includes various hits from many different eras, including swing, Latin, 60s pop, etc. The Trio features Diane Geddes on keyboard, Cathy Olsen on vocals and Tom Giaquinto on drums and vocals. This performance is sponsored by the Start Up New York grant, administered by the Arts Center of the Capital Region and the Jim Clark Community Performance Fund and the Albany Musicians Association, Local 14, AFM. No registration needed.

Child of the Holocaust

Join Dr. William Reszelbach at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, as he shares his family’s harrowing experiences at the hands of the Nazis. Dr. Reszelbach is the child of Holocaust survivors and he will discuss his parents will to survive and how those traumatic events affected their new life in the USA, as well as his own life. Please register online.

Geology hike

Explore the landscape of Thacher Park and learn how to identify different kinds of rocks and fossils. We will be meeting at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 21 at the Paint Mine parking lot, across the street from the Thacher Visitor Center. Join us as we learn about the caves, rock formations, and the geologic history of the park. This program is subject to weather cancellation, so registration is required.

 Bricks, Bits & Bots

Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to register for this learning program, scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, May 26. We will use Lego bricks for building, littleBits for inventing, and Ozobots to learn easy coding. There’s something for everyone!

Encore! Books

The book sheds are now open, and they are accepting donations during store hours. Their current hours, which are subject to change at their discretion, are Tuesdays: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Thursdays: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. They are always looking for new team member volunteers, of all ages, from middle school on up. What a great way to earn community service hours, and get a sneak peak at the latest donations.

May displays

Please be sure to stop in at the library to enjoy our May displays. In the hall gallery, we have Betsy A. Soares original artwork. This is a very springtime display, and much appreciated by everyone who visits. In the display case, we have a wonderful display from the USS Slater Historical Museum. Stop by and see for yourself!
