Voorheesville Library Notes for Wednesday, February 9, 2022

Modern kids, on a tour of the Knox Schoolhouse 5, enjoyed seeing what it was like to wear a dunce cap. The Voorheesville Public Library is hosting a tour to the 1898 schoolhouse, meeting at the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19.

Operation Donate: The Voorheesville Public Library will be accepting donations of personal-care items from Feb. 1 through the end of the month.

Some examples of needed items are: shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, disposable razors, body/face/hand lotions, toothpaste, and deodorant. Donations may be any size, from personal on up.

They are also looking for: Tide laundry detergent, extra-long twin-size sheets, and pillows. All donations will benefit the Sgt. Henry Johnson Veterans House in Albany. A donation box can be found on the library’s display table.

Teen Time

Students in grades 6 and older are encouraged to come to the library for an hour after school on two Fridays in February. February 11 is Maker Space, which means you can go high or low tech. Craft supplies, littleBits, sewing projects, whatever you’re interested in doing, we have it. February 18 is Gamers Edition. You can play board games, Switch games, or Magic the Gathering. We’ll help you build a winning deck. Even if you just want to relax, kick back and unwind, there is no better place than the library. Please register

Historic

schoolhouse Tour

Attendees will take a walk back in time to visit the historic Knox School House 5. Please register to visit this one room schoolhouse, constructed in 1898, and restored by the Helderberg Kiwanis Club. It is the only building in Knox currently in the National Register of Historic Places. We will be meeting at the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19. 

Antiracism

Learning Circles

Join us at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 for a virtual session of dialogue and active listening as we explore antiracist ideas and practices through books, articles, video, and podcasts. Watch “The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (link is available on our event calendar) and come ready to have brave conversations and grow your understanding. Bricks, Bits, and Bots

Children in grades Kindergarten through 5 are invited to join us on Monday, Feb. 21, to celebrate Engineers Week! You will use the library LEGO® bricks for building, littleBits for inventing, and Ozobots to learn easy coding. Please register for either the morning from 10:30 a.m. to  noon, or the afternoon from 2  3:30 p.m. session.

Bonus Borrows

Between February 1-28, patrons can choose from hundreds of titles in hoopla’s Bonus Borrow collections. These instant titles will be at no cost to the library or patron, and do not count towards borrowing limits.

Two For Tuesday

Join us for a special story time, Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 10:30 a.m.. Everything we read, or sing about, or create, will contain the number 2! Children ages 2 to 2nd grade w/caregiver will enjoy an interactive storytime that will include an art activity that can be completed at the library or at home. Please register once per family.

Curbside pickup is available during all open library hours. 

Masks are required of all visitors over the age of two, regardless of vaccination status.
