Middleburgh Library Notes for Friday, August 17, 2018

On Aug. 20, at 2 p.m., a spirited group of people will get together in the Community Room to play Mahjong. Don't know how to play? No problem! They will teach you how.

No registration is required. In August, Mahjong will be on Monday afternoons.

Insight Meditation

On Aug. 21, at 5:15 p.m., the library will host a meditation group.

What do you want most deeply? Seeing your life calmly and clearly helps answer this. Insight Meditation is a simple way to steady your mind, stop wandering in daydreams, and end the suffering of troubling thoughts.

Our group is a place to sit quietly in safety, supported by others; to allow understanding and compassion to arise; to encourage loving-kindness and patience. We welcome those with no experience to advanced mediators, teens to seniors. Give it a try. No registration is required. There is no fee. All are welcome.

Book discussion

On Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. join us for  “The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin presented by Diane Stewart. This book is about a middle-aged man who owns a failing independent bookstore on Alice Island off the coast of Massachusetts. Depressed for the past two years following the death of his wife, Fikry is lonesome, angry and a bit of a literary snob. He doesn’t just stock any old book in Island Books, where “No Man Is an Island; Every Book Is a World.” Only those titles that satisfy his old-fashioned tastes are allowed in.

Concert

On Aug. 24 come and enjoy "Runa."  Quickly gaining recognition as one of Irish music’s new “super-groups,” RUNA has been enchanting audiences by pushing the boundaries of Irish folk music into the Americana and roots music formats since their formation in 2008. Interweaving the haunting melodies and exuberant tunes of Ireland and Scotland with the lush harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of jazz, bluegrass, flamenco and blues, they offer a thrilling and redefining take on traditional music.

The group has been honored internationally, winning Top Group and Top Traditional Group in the Irish Music Awards and four Independent Music Awards including Best Live Album, Best World/Traditional Song and Best Bluegrass Song.

This event is made possible in part with public funds from the Decentralization Program and the NYS Council on the Arts, administered by the Community Arts Grant Program by the Greene County Council on the Arts.

No registration required. Tickets are available at the door with a $10 suggested donation. Please use back entrance.
