Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, September 11, 2019

“My First Library Card” bears are now available at Guilderland Public Library along with Toy Story cards and other newer designs to choose from. 

It’s almost time! Join us for a fun-kadelic evening: Guilderland Library Foundation’s Fourth Annual Gala, a Feelin’ Groovy Celebration, on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Albany Country Club, beginning at 6 p.m. 

Attendees are welcome to come dressed in 1960s- or 1970s-themed attire if desired.

Chris Aldrich, former Guilderland Public Library Trustee and 2018 Upper Hudson Library System Trustee of the Year, and Susan Novotny, owner of The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza, will be honored. 

Cash bar and silent auction begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner, the honoree presentation, and live auction starting at 7 p.m.  

Tickets for this fundraiser benefiting the library are $75 each, and the event is expected to sell out. Autumn Marketplace 

We’re hosting a fall vendor fair once again this year on Saturday Sept. 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring a variety of goods, which could include health & beauty products, fashion accessories, home décor, kitchenware, candles, jewelry and more!

GPL Adventures: Paper Planes & Boomerangs 

Kids in third through fifth grades are invited to a high-flying adventure on Thursday. Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. for GPL Adventures: Paper Planes & Boomerangs.

They’ll experiment with different materials and designs to create the furthest flying plane and the best boomerang. Weather permitting, we’ll test our creations outside. Please register online, by phone, or in person.  

Better Books Sale

There are certain constants you can count on in life. One of them is our Better Books Sale the second Saturday of each month. Tempting deep discounts on books, CDs and DVDs will be on display Saturday Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., benefitting both you and the library.  We dare you to leave empty-handed!

Bilingual Story Time

Come celebrate the Autumn Moon Festival with a story time in both Mandarin and English!  Miss Julia will share “Ni Hao Mr. Moon!” with us on Saturday Sept. 14 at 10:30 a.m., geared toward children aged 6 and under. No registration is needed for this family-friendly event.  

GPL Sprouts: Taste Buds

Mad Science is back! on Monday, Sept. 16 at 3:30 p.m.  Children in pre-kindergarten through second grade will learn about the biology behind their taste buds and take home their very own taste test kit. 

Hands-on experimentation with magnifiers, model tongues, and mirrors will test the classic “tongue map” model. We’ll determine “supertasters” in our midst, and a nose-plugging experiment will demonstrate the link between taste and smell. Please register online, by phone, or in person.  

Story times resume

We’re excited to usher in another season of story times for your little ones! All story times commence at 10:30 a.m.

Baby Bookworms (birth-18 months with a caregiver) starts Tueday. Sept. 17 (no storytime Oct. 1).  Toddler Time (ages 19-36 months with a caregiver) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays begins Sept. 17 (no storytime Oct. 1 and 9).

Preschool Drop-in Storytime (ages 3-5 years with a caregiver; younger siblings welcome) occurs Wednesdays & Thursdays starting Sept. 18 (no storytime Oct. 9 and 23).  Waddler Time (new walkers up to 24 months with a caregiver) is on Thursdays starting Sept. 19.  

Tiny Towns

Peter McPherson, inventor of the acclaimed board game Tiny Towns, was here recently to describe the soup-to-nuts process of creating a winning board game.He returns to GPL Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. to teach us how to play this fun and easy-to-learn game, sharing key strategies for becoming a Tiny Towns champion!
