Photobombed by an alpaca: Six-year-old Jaiden Diaz peeks out from around the furry head of alpaca Griffin, at the June 21 celebration of National Llama Appreciation Day at the Guilderland Public Library. Kids could decorate and then keep small felt llamas made by 4-Her Emma Hunt’s grandfather, Dave Appleby.

Llamas at the Library: Three-year-old Amelia Rapp reaches out to pet a llama named River at the Guilderland Public Library on June 21, during a celebration to mark National Llama Appreciation Day. Two llamas and one alpaca from Wunsapana Farm in Guilderland Center were in the library courtyard to greet youngsters. The creatures were handled by members of farm owner Teri Conroy’s Wunsapana Llamas 4-H Club including Elara Newell, center, who holds River’s lead.

We’re over the moon about A Universe of Stories, blasting off on Friday, June 28! Stop by the Guilderland Public Library either from 3 to 4 p.m. or from 6 to 7 p.m. for ice cream and details on all the stellar selections awaiting you.

Cardholders age 18 and older are invited to create an account on guilderlandlibrary.beanstack.org to log your reading from July 1 through Aug. 30. You may also visit us at the library and we’ll log your progress for you.

Bonding, sensory stimulation, baby massage and other therapeutic benefits are covered. Quality tummy time now supports school readiness later! Please register online, by phone, or in person.

Be A VolunTeen!

Once the novelty of school-free days wears off, teens often wonder what they can do to feel productive and keep boredom at bay. We’ve got the perfect solution: Sign up to become a VolunTeen at Guilderland Public Library this summer.

VolunTeens must be in grades 8 to 12 in the fall and attend the informational session Monday, July 1, at 7 p.m., while parents are invited to attend the concurrent parent informational session in the Normanskill Room.

If you’ve volunteered during a previous summer, simply pick up an application at the library and skip the sign-up night. This is a terrific opportunity to gain valuable resume-worthy experience while helping GPL with our brimming calendar of summer programming.

Closed on July 4

Please note: The library is closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

ESOL tutor training

Literacy NY Greater Capital Region is looking for new literacy volunteers for the 2019-20 school year. A training module is scheduled at GPL on Saturday. July 6, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Training consists of an orientation, three self-paced online modules, and a post-training follow-up class. After training is completed, you’ll be paired with an adult student who is learning English or improving his or her literacy skills.

The small investment of your time can make a lasting impact on someone’s life, while providing you with a sense of gratification. To register or for more information, please contact Christina Darling at cdarling@literacynycap.org.

Please note: You must attend both in-person sessions:  Saturday, July 6, and Saturday, Aug. 3.
