Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, May 26, 2021

“The Dutch House,”  a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction by best-selling author Ann Patchett, is the subject of Guilderland Public Library’s Night Owls Online book discussion on Monday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Over two-thirds of Guilderland voters supported our proposed 2021-22 budget — essentially the same margin as last year. We are very grateful for this solid show of support as we dealt with the twin challenges of construction and the pandemic. We take our responsibility of serving the community and stewarding the resources entrusted to us very seriously, and we sincerely appreciate this vote of confidence.

Four new GPL Trustees were elected: Vanessa Threatte, Antonio Rivera, Norina Melita, and Michael Hawrylchak. We look forward to working with these accomplished individuals on library initiatives, and we thank Herb Hennings and Philip Metzger Jr. for their dedicated service.

Operating schedule

GPL will pause operations on Saturday, May 29 through Monday, May 31 in observance of Memorial Day weekend. No curbside or return services will be available on those days. Starting June 1, our expanded curbside schedule is:  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday  9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday  9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Sunday 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Due to limited interior space from construction plus social distancing constraints, GPL is currently not open to public browsing. Construction update

We’re diligently preparing to unveil a freshly renovated and expanded library in just a few short months to facilitate community connections and lifelong learning. We look forward to welcoming you back! This major construction project is on budget and 11 months ahead of schedule, with completion anticipated around the end of August, 2021. All-Ages Summer Reading

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 29 as we finalize plans for our “Tails and Tales” Summer Reading Program kickoff at Farnsworth Middle School. Summer reading provides an incentive for preschoolers through high schoolers to enjoy books, complete activities, attend programs, earn points and win prizes. More details may be found at:  https://guilderlandlibrary.org/srp and on our GPL Kids and Families Facebook page.

Adults: You’re encouraged to participate in summer reading too! When parents model consistent reading habits to their children, everyone benefits. But whether you’re a parent or not, you’re welcome to participate! The grand prize for adults is a basket of goodies and a $50 gift card to the Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza.  Please see: https://guilderlandlibrary.org/adultsrp for more information.

Grab & Go Story-time Kit

Pick up a story-time kit created just for you and your preschooler starting Tuesday,  June 1 during our Normanskill Room curbside hours (enter through the side door).  Each kit includes suggestions for eBooks, music, and rhymes, plus fun activities to complete together at home.  Storytime kits are intended for children ages 2-5. No registration needed; one kit per child, while supplies last.
