9 GHS musicians play in state ensembles

Musicians extraordinaire: Angelo Amore, Leonard Bopp, Andrew Dame, Therese Giordano, Hannah Hernandez, Josh Kahn, Will Wang, Allegra Wu, and Michael Zhu were selected as among the best in the state.

GUILDERLAND — Nine Guilderland High School students were selected for this year’s All State Music Ensembles: Angelo Amore, Leonard Bopp, Andrew Dame, Therese Giordano, Hannah Hernandez, Josh Kahn, Will Wang, Allegra Wu, and Michael Zhu.

Each year, thousands of student musicians from across the state compete for an opportunity to be selected for the New York State School Music Association Conference All State Music Ensembles. Admission is based on the score received the previous spring during the NYSSMA Solo Evaluation Festival. In addition, students perform before a certified adjudicator who evaluates every aspect of their performance.

The selected students will spend four days rehearsing in Rochester and will play in a concert at Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music.

Hernandez will sing in the All-State Chorus under the direction of Dr. Joe Miller from Westminster Choir College.

Wu will play flute in the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb from Fredonia State.

Bopp will play violin in the Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Meyer from Ithaca College.

Amore and Wang on clarinet, and Dame on trumpet will perform in the All-State Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. Stephen Peterson from Ithaca College.

Giordano and Kahn were recognized as alternates for their stellar performances last spring.
