ALBANY COUNTY —Hilltown residents spoke to the Albany County Legislature Monday night, asking that towers proposed by the sheriff not be built in places that would mar important Helderberg views.

In December, Scenic Rensselaerville, a group that court papers describe as having 170 members, many of them artists, sued the Albany County sheriff in December.

“This is today’s world,” said Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple after the March 24 active shooter drill at Clayton A. Bouton High School in Voorheesville — the largest such drill ever held in Albany County.

A pilot program at the county jail to help drug addicts who want to quit is a needed step to stop the vicious circle of addiction leading to crime; it will save not only money but lives.

The law passed both houses without any opposing votes. It was a minor adjustment to the social services law that deals with access to private records during an investigation of a missing child.

KNOX — While 5-year-old Kenneth White’s aunt and legal guardian was away for 30 minutes to visit his school Thursday afternoon, he was strangled in his home, police say.

Guilderland Police arrested a 29-year-old homeless man for attempted burglaries, who then hanged himself in jail. The sheriff estimates the county's jail has one suicide a year.
