Voorheesville and New Scotland were just awarded a $10,000 grant from the Preservation League of New York State to fund a cultural resource survey for the village and the hamlets of New Salem and New Scotland.

VOORHEESVILLE — The village board searched far and wide before settling on a trustee replacement for Rich Straut, who took over as mayor for Bob Conway when he stepped down on July 1 with nine months left in his term. 

“The big thing we want to get going now is socialization,” Deb Engel, New Scotland’s senior outreach coordinator, told the town board at its July 14 meeting. 

VOORHEESVILLE — The village of Voorheesville has asked the federal regulator with oversight of a significant rail deal to reject the proposal because of the “significant impact” the transaction would have on the community.

SLINGERLANDS — Kenneth Hallenbeck and Olive Mae Wright were married on Aug. 10, 1957 at 2 o’clock at St. Madeleine Sophie Church on Carman Road in Guilderland.

After 64 years of marriage, Mrs. Hallenbeck says, “Marriage is not 50-50. Sometimes it’s 75-25 percent of give and take, always with trust and understanding.”

NEW SCOTLAND — The Heldeberg Workshop at the foot of the escarpment — where generations of kids have had “adventures in learning” on The Land — will now be protected in perpetuity.

On July 9, the workshop finalized a conservation easement with the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy.

Stewart’s Shops filed a lawsuit against Voorheesville in September 2019, claiming there had been a “targeted effort” to prevent Stewart’s from building a new shop on property it owns at 112 Maple Ave., site of the now-closed Smith’s Tavern.
