Photos: Wrestlers Battle Hard On The Mat, Dutch Send Two To States

On Saturday, Feb. 10, Guilderland and Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Middleburgh wrestling teams competed in the 2024 Section 2 wrestling state qualifiers in Glens Falls. BKW-Middleburgh had five compete with two in the top six while the Dutch had four and will be sending two to the New York State Wrestling Championships competition.

Rocking him to sleep: Guilderland’s Sean Guynup lays on the back of Columbia’s Cole Posniewski in an attempt to roll Posniewski on his back in their division 1,  215-pound first round match. Guynup won 9-7.

Roll back: Bulldogs’ Christian Arsenault looks to use all his weight to push back on Warrensburg-Lake George’s Lucas French in an attempt to get an early pin in Arsenault’s Division 2, 170-pound first-round match. Arsenault fell by pin in 3:14.

Points at the last second: Guilderland’s Konnor Dott uses his strength to try and push Shenendehowa’s Anthony Kennedy’s shoulders to the mat as a mat worker is ready to tell the ref the period is over in the division 1, first round 190-pound match. Dott won 5 to 4.

Bringing the pain: Bulldogs’ Matthew Cyr cranks on the upper body on Hoosick Falls’ Jacob Jones in their division 2, 215-pound first round match. Cyr won by pin in 32 seconds.

Using force: Guilderland’s Abdo Baraeya brings his arm from behind Burnt Hills’ Duncan VanWely in an attempt to put VanWely onto his back in their Division 1, 152-pound quarterfinal match. Baraeya won by pin in 4:55 and qualified for states by finishing second.

Taking a ride: Bulldogs’ Lincoln Snyder gets lifted off the ground by Granville’s Antonio Landon in their division 2, 190-pound quarterfinal match. Snyder fell by pin in 1:19 and battled back to finish 6th overall.

Getting his revenge: Bulldogs’ Matthew Dibble pushes down on Tamarac’s Alex Vaughn’s shoulders to the mat under the watchful eyes of the ref in the quarterfinal matchup in the division 2, 285-pound match. Dibble lost to Vaughn last week and came back to pin him in 1:31 and finished 6th overall.

Biding his time: Guilderland’s Billy Pokeda peers out figuring out his next move while on top of Shaker’s Nicholas Mosher in the division 1 quarterfinal 285-pound matchup. Pokeda won 6-3 and went on to win state qualifiers to advance to states.
