Villagers to vote on ending service awards for members of defunct squad

VOORHEESVILLE — Residents of the village may vote Tuesday, Nov. 15, on discontinuing the Length Of Service Award program, known as LOSAP, for members of the Voorheesville Area Ambulance Service. The LOSAP program provides pensions for volunteers.

VAAS stopped functioning on Oct. 15.

"The LOSAP program has money for 36 members; most have left service or moved but, since they are vested in one year, several still have accounts," according to Voorheesville's clerk treasurer, Linda Pasquali.

The VAAS has four to six members at the time it disbanded, Pasquali believes.

“This will allow them to cash out,” said Karen Finnessey, the village’s deputy clerk-treasurer.

If the proposition doesn’t pass, she said, “They would pay yearly fees until they are 62...Some members had not accrued much. The yearly fees would wipe them out.”

Finnessey also noted, “As of October 15, they can no longer accrue points.”

The vote is scheduled before the end of the year, Finnessey said, because it “allows them to be taken out in the first quarter of next year. It will save them paying another fee.”

Even if some former VAAS members go on to serve with a squad in Bethlehem, Finnessey said, the LOSAP contributions from Voorheesville would cease.

The vote will take place at the Voorheesville firehouse at 12 Altamont Road from noon to 9 p.m.

Updated on Nov. 8, 2016: Linda Pasquali provided information that most of the 36 VAAS members in the LOSAP program had left VAAS, with just four to six remaining at the time it disbanded.
