After 13 DWIs, Popp sentenced to prison

Kevin Popp

BETHLEHEM — Kevin Popp of Delmar was sentenced Tuesday to one-and-a-third to four years in State Prison before Judge Stephen W. Herrick in Albany County Court. On Sept. 27, Popp had pleaded guilty to one count of driving while intoxicated, a felony. He had 13 previous DWI convictions, according to a release from the Albany County District Attorney’s Office

Popp, 48, was also ordered to pay a $2,000 fine, in addition to having a mandatory ignition interlock device for three years, his license revoked for 18 months subject to determination by the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, and completing the Victim Impact Panel and Impaired Driver Programs.

On Aug. 25, at about 10:36 p.m., Popp was pulled over by Bethlehem Police on Euclid Avenue in Bethlehem for driving a vehicle with an outdated registration, according to the release; during the traffic stop, Popp admitted that his license was suspended.  The officers noticed Popp had the odor of alcohol on his breath, and bloodshot glassy eyes, the release said; Popp later admitted to consuming alcohol before driving.

He was arrested after failing several field sobriety tests, and testing positive in a pre-screen breath test.

Assistant District Attorney David J. Szalda of the Vehicular Crimes Unit prosecuted this case.
