YMCA offers swim lessons and lifeguard training

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland YMCA offers swimming lessons to anyone 6 months old or older.

For those unsure of level placements, evaluations may be set up by the YMCA’s aquatics staff; for an appointment at 456-3634, ext. 1131.

The Fall II Program runs from Oct. 26 to Dec. 13.

Lifeguard training

The YMCA partners with the American Red Cross to offer lifeguard training, a 25-hour class for those who want to be certified as a lifeguard.

Swimmers will learn water rescues; land rescues; scanning techniques; head, neck, and back rescues; entries, first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

To complete the course, swimmers must successfully finish the water scenarios and receive 80 percent or better on the written tests, along with attending all the classes. Becoming a professional lifeguard teaches you skills that you carry through life.
