Confidence in the electoral process is crucial to a healthy democracy

To the Editor:
The 2022 and 2024 elections will be critical to the future of our democracy. Trump and his political allies repeatedly claim that the 2020 election was stolen.

Sadly, many trusting Americans (70 percent of Republicans) believe the ex-president despite the fact that Republican judges (some appointed by Trump himself), state attorneys general, and election officials concluded that the election was legitimately won by Joe Biden.

Confidence in the electoral process is crucial to a healthy democracy. If we lose that, we will all suffer.

Trump preys on our anger and fear, but he did nothing to substantially improve the lives of average Americans when he was in office. His tax cut went disproportionately to the wealthy. You can check it out online; the numbers were published by his own administration.

In contrast, Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act enacted several measures that help ordinary folks. It gave Medicare the right to negotiate drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, put a cap on out-of-pocket drug expenses, extended assistance for medical insurance premiums, created many jobs in the production of renewable energy products, and much more.

President Biden isn’t perfect, but his message is about kindness, healing, working together, and helping those of us who need it the most. We are all essentially brothers and sisters, and we have to patiently work together to solve the many challenges which face us.

Please remember to vote! It is a precious privilege and duty.
