Mkas Lika sells clothing and accessories that will “capture everybody’s eyes,” says owner Monica Kasongo Muamba.

GUILDERLAND — A new store in Hamilton Square offers unique clothing and accessories for men and women, handpicked from around the world by store owner Monica Kasongo Muamba.

Her inventory is, said Kasongo Muama, reasonably priced. She described it as “something you wear and capture everybody’s eyes.” She plans to carry only items that she likes.

Kasongo Muamba is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in central Africa.

The men’s clothing in her shop is all from Italy, she said. She sells jewelry from France and the Philippines, and handbags from South Africa, Romania, and Brazil. Many of the hats she sells are made in the United States.

“I’m gathering all the five continents here,” Kasongo Muamba said.

After coming to the United States in 1990, Muamba went to nursing school, a field she chose, she said, because there were so many different types of career paths open to nurses. She worked first as a floor nurse at Albany Medical Center, then moved into the role of an education specialist, teaching other nurses. She now teaches nursing as an adjunct professor at Maria College and at Excelsior College.

Kasongo Muamba also founded a not-for-profit organization in Albany to educate and empower women and girls, called Sister to Sister’s Keeper.

Her store opened in June, but will have a grand opening celebration on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m., with refreshments.

In the future, she hopes to expand her business to include rentals of dresses and suits for interviews or occasions, which she says could be a very affordable alternative to buying.

The name of her store, Mkas Lika, is an amalgam of her own name (Mkas for Monica Kasongo) and Lika after the name of a business her late father ran for many years. “It was very important for me to carry his name,” she said.

Mkas Lika is located at 2080 Western Ave., between Citizens Bank and Natural Nails.
