Read, tour, and celebrate Altamont’s history

To the Editor:
I am writing to thank Mr. Bruce Dearstyne for his “Take a tour of Guilderland’s history” write-up that was published in The Enterprise on Aug. 4. This is a very comprehensive piece about our wonderful town.

I wanted to add that, if folks are interested in learning additional information about the history of Altamont, there are a couple fun resources that are also available. First, we have the Hudson River Greenway sponsored Museum in the Streets self-guided tour through the village. Folks can learn about various buildings in Altamont including their history and provenance.

The Arcadia Press book “Images of America - Altamont” is also a great resource. The book is filled with anecdotes about the village and the people who have lived here throughout the years. There are several interesting photos of village homes and businesses that have since changed or no longer exist. Copies are available at Village Hall during regular business hours for $20. All proceeds go to support the Altamont Archives & Museum. Cash or check only — checks may be made payable to V/A - Roger Keenholts Fund.

Additionally, if you are interested in future history events around the village, we have a few items in the works for this fall.

Our Founders Day information tent will be set up at the Altamont Fall Fun Day. This event will be hosted by Altamont Community Tradition and is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 24, from noon to 4 p.m. in Orsini Park. There will be food trucks, a bounce house, live music, plus activities and games for the kids.

We will also have a walking tour of the village at 10 a.m. on Sept. 24 to kick off the festivities. We hope to see you there!
