Girl Scouts collect shoes for developing nations

Girl Scout Troop 1482 is holding a shoe-drive fundraiser through the Funds2Orgs Organization. All shoes collected will be repurposed and sent to developing nations, in an effort to provide economic opportunities for micro-entrepreneurs, as well as to help the environment through the use of recycling.

The Girl Scout troop is collecting new or gently-worn shoes. All shoes collected must be in wearable condition — so no holes or rips. The Scouts are not able to accept any roller-skates or ice-skates.

Donation barrels are located at the Knox transfer station and the Berne library for shoe collection.  Please contact Tami Hanley at or 518-872-9893 if you have a large shoe donation that you need to have picked up.

The girls are hosting this fundraiser to help earn money toward their senior trip next April to Turks and Caicos Islands, southeast of the Bahamas.

“These girls have been together as a troop since first grade, and will be graduating from high school in 2020,” said leader Tami Hanley. “Please help them to reach their goal by donating your old or unworn shoes today!”
