VOORHEESVILLE FARMER MAY DIE;

INJURED IN PREMATURE EXPLOSION
Florance Boughton, twenty-eight, a farmer living near Voorheesville, is in a critical condition in the Albany hospital as a result of a premature dynamite explosion while blasting tree stumps on his farm late Tuesday afternoon. Boughton was thrown several feet in the air when struck by the full impact of the charge. Surgeons say his chance for recovery is light.

Part of the charge struck him in the face, injuring his eyes so badly that surgeons say he will lose the sight of both. His right hand was blown off and the wrist and the left arm severed below the elbow. The right leg was broken below the knee and dynamite entered all parts of his body, causing severe burns.

Boughton was rushed to the Albany hospital in an automobile by his wife and a neighbor, in an effort to save his life. Dr. Edgar A. Vander Veer was waiting at the hospital when the party arrived at 7 o’clock. Boughton was placed on the operating table immediately. Mrs. Boughton remained at the hospital all night, standing by while surgeons worked for hours.

There were no witnesses to the accident. Boughton was working in a field a short distance from his home when the explosion occurred. Mrs. Boughton heard her husband’s screams and ran to his assistance. Calling for help from a neighboring farm, Mrs. Boughton gave first aid to her husband and he was carried into the home. It was decided to get the injured man to the Albany hospital as quickly as possible and an automobile was summoned, the eighteen mile trip being made in fast time.
It is thought that Boughton was bending over the charge, placing it in a stump, when the dynamite exploded prematurely.

Word was received this morning as to Mr. Boughton’s condition that he appeared a little stronger last night.
