Anna Marie Seiz

Anna Marie Seiz

Born at home in Glendale, New York on May 24, 1929, Anna Marie (née Wiegmann) Seiz “passed into Eternal Life on April 4, Easter Sunday, 2021,” her family said. She was 91.

An active church member, she began teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Middle Village, the same church in which she was baptized and confirmed.

After graduation from the business program at Jamaica Vocational High School, she went to work at McMillan Publishing in Manhattan, as assistant to the College Textbook Unit Manager; later she became secretary to the vice president of United Board and Carton Company.

In 1949, she married Edward Andrew Seiz. They built a house in Rosedale where, in 1956, she left her job in New York City to be a stay-at-home mom. “In addition to being a full-time mom to two daughters,” her family wrote in a tribute, “Anne joined Christ Lutheran Church in Rosedale, where she continued to teach Sunday School, mid-week instruction, sing in the choir, and chaired the LCW group.

“She was office secretary and a charter member of Christ Lutheran School, the church’s elementary school. Anne and her longtime friend Dotty organized a fundraiser fashion show, with cooperation from merchants in the garment district of Manhattan.

“They contacted the merchants, organized the show, volunteers to model, set and decorate the hall, went to Manhattan to pick up the clothes, priced them, sized them, wrote the comments for each, handled the orders and finances, and finally returned the unsold garments to Manhattan.

“The show was a great success, all the guests and participants had a wonderful time — and exhausted Anne and Dottie swore never to do that again!

“In 1968, when her family moved to Schoharie, Anne joined Bethany Lutheran Church in Central Bridge, where she continued to teach Sunday School and first-year confirmation classes, as well as sing in the choir. Unfortunately, there were no post-confirmation programs so, after Karen was confirmed, they transferred to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Middleburgh, where Anne continued teaching first-year confirmation, singing in choir, serving as council secretary, chairing the Christian Education program, and LCW afternoon group, as well as acting as chaperone when Susan’s youth group went to the Youth Group Conference in Niagara Falls.

“Anne was also active in her community, as secretary for the Scho-Wright Ambulance Auxiliary, a Girl Scout leader for both daughters, and assisting clients at Eleanor Roosevelt Developmental Services.

“In 1980, Anne moved again, this time to Altamont, where she joined St. John’s, and, of course, the choir. She worked at ‘The Grand’ Guilderland Center nursing home, and later for Blue Cross until she retired.

“Anne became more active at St John’s, attending fellowship meetings, Bible study and monthly services at ‘The Grand.’ She joined the Altamont Seniors at their Tuesday lunch and program, usually followed by games of Canasta with the ‘Canasta Cats’ and sometimes ‘+ Kitten’ when granddaughter Sara could join them. Active with the senior programs and tours, she eventually served as chair.

“In 2017, granddaughter Rebecca (with Mike) presented her with her great-grandson, Killian.

“She loved to paint, garden, and do crafts. The lasting results of her hobbies can be seen at the Oaks, (she was their longest resident) in the gardens she created around her apartment, and the painted rocks decorating the grounds, as well as in the creativity of her daughters and granddaughters.

“She also enjoyed cooking, and always arrived at family events with ‘just one more recipe’ she had to try — another gift passed on to her daughters and granddaughters.

“And thanks to the seniors and Wade Tours, she was able to indulge her love of travel, experiencing new places with the other seniors, and especially her dear friend Bea, as they traveled the length and breadth of the Eastern Seaboard.

“And to prove it’s never too late for new adventures or starting a new career, she accepted a role in the 2011 film, ‘Know Candy’ (she’s the elderly patient being escorted into the ‘nursing home’ — look fast!)

“Anne moved one last time. While ‘Zooming’ St John’s Easter Sunday service with her beloved church family, Mom slipped gently away to her Eternal Home.”

****

She is survived by her daughters, Karen and Susan; granddaughters, Rebecca and Sara; and great-grandson, Killian.

A Memorial Service — Rebirth Celebration will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 140 Maple Ave. in Altamont on Sunday, April 10, 2022, at 3 p.m. to mark “Anne’s First Anniversary in Paradise,” her family wrote. “Please come and celebrate her life with us.”
