Lady Dutch tennis goes one for three in sectionals
By Jordan J. Michael
GUILDERLAND The Lady Dutch tennis team sent two singles players and a doubles team to Central Park in Schenectady on Wednesday for the Section II quarterfinals and one player lived to see another match.
Gaby Peda, the number-four seed, beat Emily Lauvilliard of Niskayuna, 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the semi-finals. The match will be played on Monday at 2 p.m. at Sportstime in Rotterdam.
Guilderland’s two other matches were surrendered to players from Emma Willard. Kirsten Ackerman lost to Claire Schmitz, 3-6, 7-6, and 3-6; and the doubles team of Rachel Ellenbogen and Kacie Weatherhead lost to Mitali Das and Molly Goodman, 2-6, 1-6.
“Everyone played great today,” said Head Coach Deb O’Brien after the matches ended on Wednesday.
Ellenbogen and Ackerman, both seniors, played their final matches for the Lady Dutch.
The tournament field started with 64 singles players and 64 doubles pairings. The players from Guilderland had already won three matches each before entering competition on Wednesday.
A week ago, Guilderland’s entire team was playing in the Class AA sectionals. After beating Niskayuna, 8 to 1, the Dutch traveled to Shaker last Thursday and lost in the semi-finals, 5 ½ to 3 ½.
“We only lost twice during the season,” O’Brien said. “Shaker was really strong. Those girls log a lot of hours on the court.”
