Fifty markers to celebrate Guilderland history

To the Editor:
April 26, 2024 is National Historic Marker Day.

This day is sponsored by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation based in Syracuse. The Guilderland Historical Society has benefited greatly from its ties with the Pomeroy Foundation.

Last year, grants from this foundation allowed us to erect historic markers for the McKownville Historic District, Fullers, and the Great Western Turnpike.

This year, Pomeroy grants will allow the Guilderland Historical Society to erect markers featuring the D&H railroad to be installed soon at the Altamont Free Library, Settles Hill to be installed on Settles Hill Road, and a Revolutionary War Patriot grave marker honoring John VanderPool, also on Settles Hill Road.

An additional featured marker will be the marker honoring William McKown to be installed on May 18 at the entrance to Stuyvesant Plaza. This marker was obtained by the McKownville Improvement  Association. This will be a great addition to this Guilderland story.

When all are installed, there will be 50 historical markers in Guilderland.

John Haluska, Vice President, Guilderland Historical Society
