Large late-night fire damages the home of Tom and Sally Ketchum, well known in Altamont as the owners of Ketchum’s gas station on Main Street.

Smoke billowed from a hole cut in the back of the mansard roof, produced by a kitchen fire at the popular Indian restaurant.

The barns were a total loss, but four miniature horses were removed safely.

According to the Albany County assessment rolls, the house, which stands on 1.09 acres, had a full market value of $190,795.

A ceremony held Feb. 25 honored the work of firefighters, police, ambulance, and dispatchers from around the area who rescued six residents, including two adults and one child, from within a burning home in McKownville. "It was truly a unique life-saving event," said Guilderland Supervisor Peter Barber.

Westmere and McKownville Fire Departments held a breakfast fundraiser on Feb. 21 for a family that escaped a devastating house fire in January.

VOORHEESVILLE — A small percentage of Voorheesville residents turned out on Wednesday to vote on the question of whether to raise the Length of Service Award Program funds credited each year to qualifying volunteer firefighters. An overwhelming majority of those voters agreed to raise that amount.

Because of the state tax freeze, villagers will not see their taxes rise over the next few years as a result of any increase to firefighters' pensions, according to the Voorheesville village clerk.

It was to be an ordinary flight from Baltimore to Albany, the final leg home from a business trip to Atlanta. He hadn’t planned to save anybody that day.
