BERNE — A 9-year-old Berne-Knox-Westerlo student has placed third in the annual Child Abuse Prevention Posters Contest.

The student, Sadie Poole, had drawn herself and her family to demonstrate the love a family has. The poster includes herself, her brother and sister, her parents, her dog Max, and her cat Pumpkin.

GUILDERLAND — All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2017 Knights of Columbus Jason Brown Memorial Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, with a makeup date of Jan. 14.

BETHLEHEM — Richard Gotti of Delmar won second place and $75 in the Hudson Valley Writers’ Guild 2016 Short Fiction Contest for his short story, “The Master Bedroom.”

The judging process at the fair can seem opaque, but it actually encourages entrants to do a job well.
