On May 16, school district voters will decided on a $1,171,500 Voorheesville Public Library budget for next year. The spending plan, after two years of no increase, is up slightly but still under the state’s tax levy limit.

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Public Library’s board of trustees has approved an operating budget for 2017-18 of $4,038,583, based on a tax levy of $3,689,217.

When the state budget was finalized, a week after deadline, the Voorheesville schools came out $55,000 ahead of what the governor had proposed in aid, allowing the addition of two part-time teachers.

The $35,000 to repair Guilderland’s 1800s cobblestone schoolhouse that was originally included in the superintendent’s draft budget has brought heated discussion.

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo School District received $100,000 more in state aid than it had budgeted for. After a debate over whether to use all the funds to reduce taxes, the board of education agreed on a 50-50 split between the tax levy and the district fund balance.

BERNE — A decision by the governor and the New York State legislature to extend the state’s current budget until May 31 has left many school districts concerned about how they will develop their own budgets without knowing the amount of state aid.

Altamont’s $2 million budget includes 2-percent raises for village workers with longevity bonuses — all with the same tax rate of $2.73 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Based on aid in the governor’s budget proposal, Voorheesville plans to add two new teaching positions. The school board delayed finalizing its $24 million budget, though, as it waits for an overdue state budget.

BERNE — Although it has seen some increases this year, Berne’s library is still working toward a goal of receiving more funding, in the hopes of adding more hours to serve the public.

New Berne-Knox-Westerlo programs planned for 2017-18 school year include an expanded agricultural science program.
