His children are 10th-generation performers, and people in his family grow up seeing everyone else ride motorcycles and wanting to do it themselves, said Richard Flores. “If they’re not riding in the cage,” he said, “they’re the weird one in the family, because everybody’s doing it.”

For some of the kids from Albany’s South End Café, their trip next week to the Altamont Fair will be the first time they have seen a cow, or horse, or goat, or sheep.

The flag with the Southern Cross was rarely used during the decades following the Civil War. It was revived only during the Civil Rights era to oppose the movement toward equality. As such, it is less a symbol of Southern heritage than it is of white supremacy.

ALTAMONT — After more than a decade without a demolition derby, the Altamont Fair is bringing the event back for this year’s fair.

Don Rittner believes that the Altamont Fair, with its many museums and long-standing traditions, can fill the gap left by schools that no longer teach civics or history. He’s writing a book on the fair’s 125-year history.

Visitors to the 2018 Altamont Fair will pay a couple of dollars more for admission, but some new attractions may help ease the sting.

“I’ll pull out a frame and talk about what goes on inside,” said Tim Norray of how he plans to teach fair-goers about keeping bees.

ALTAMONT — As it celebrates its 125th anniversary, the Altamont Fair is “working hard” to preserve its history, says Bev Filkins who chairs a committee of volunteers that has been immersed in the the project for two years.
