Carve a pumpkin on Nov. 1 BKW Bulldog Pride supports extracurricular activities

To the Editor:

BKW Bulldog Pride is a nonprofit organization formed to support the arts, music, athletics, and extracurricular activities for the students at Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District. When the budget cuts began two years ago and talks, yet again, targeted extracurricular activities at BKW, a group was formed to proactively begin raising funds so that, in the event that further cuts were made to sports, music, the arts, or extracurricular activities, a fund would have been started and the mechanism to accept donations would be established.

We have seen neighboring towns scramble to raise funds over a summer to fund programs and we thought we could get things started and try to be ready.

The mission is to procure donations, either money or physical items, through various fund-raisers and events to maintain and/or restore programs and activities that the school budget can no longer support.

In its first full year of existence, Bulldog Pride has made great strides. We officially obtained 501(c)(3) status in January. With the help of our community and neighboring towns, we have been able to raise over $5,000 towards our initial goal of $10,000. Through local chicken barbecues, garage sales, and other events, the community has supported our efforts and we are truly thankful.

We have also been able facilitate the donation of the following items to BKW: $2,500 worth of musical instruments, six brand new sewing machines worth $2,200, a potter’s wheel, a Bowflex fitness machine, and over 20 boxes of art and craft supplies.

We strive to continue our success with the help of you, the great people of the BKW community. Volunteers are always welcome to help with organizing and supporting our events.

If anyone is wondering what he or she could do to help, tell us what you love to do. Do you like to ride motorcycles? Perhaps you could help organize a Poker Run. Do you like to play golf? Perhaps you could help with a golf tournament. Bowlers? A Scotch Doubles Tournament might be fun.

Every little bit helps our kids. For more information on how to become a member or for a list of our upcoming events, visit us at bkwbulldogpride.org or email BKWBulldogPride@gmail.com.

Our next event, The BKW Pumpkin Pride Extravaganza, will be a Pumpkin-Carving Contest and Luminary Walk. This will be held Friday, Nov. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Knox town park. Come, walk through, and vote on your favorite pumpkin. Prizes will be awarded for winners of various categories. The carving entry is free.

Let us know if you would like to enter a pumpkin by Oct. 25. See our ad for details. So bring the family and come enjoy!
