Voorheesville man arrested for sex offenses with minor

Steven J. Van Alstyne

VOORHEESVILLE — Last week, Steven J. Van Alstyne, 51, turned himself in to New York State Police after a month-long investigation into his alleged sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old girl.

The investigation began in East Greenbush in August, when the complainant and her family reported the situation to police, said Trooper Mark Cepiel, public information officer for New York State Police Troop G.

The East Greenbush Police quickly got the State Police involved when they found that the inappropriate sexual conduct took place in several towns in three counties — Albany, Saratoga, and Rensselaer, Cepiel said.

As the investigation is still developing, all the towns are not known yet, Cepiel said.

The sexual offenses took place over two and a half years, according to a release from the state police.

Van Alstyne knew the girl through a “mutual acquaintance,” said Cepiel. The Voorheesville resident turned himself in on Sept. 2, after being questioned by State Police earlier.

He could not be reached for comment.

Van Alstyne was charged with several counts of second- and third-degree criminal sex act, a felony; and forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors.

Van Alstyne was arraigned at East Greenbush Town Court and released on $5,000 cash bail.

If anyone has any information on this case, or has had inappropriate contact with Van Alstyne, they should contact the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 732-4644.
