GUILDERLAND — Greulich’s Market, on Carman Road, a neighborhood grocery for 61 years, closed in late July when it faced financial troubles, and this week, owner Bonnie Greulich was arrested for issuing bad checks.

According to a Guilderland Police report, Greulich was arrested on Sept. 11, after Deli Master, LLC, in Johnstown, filed a complaint stating that she had issued three bad checks, for a total of $10,910.70.

The report said Greulich had issued the checks knowing that they would be disapproved for insufficient funds, and she was arrested for a misdemeanor.

A representative from Deli Masters, LLC said the company had no comment, and Greulich could not be reached.

In July, Guilderland’s receiver of taxes, Lynne Buchanan, told The Enterprise that the 2013 school tax portion of the property taxes on the store — which has an assessed valuation of $395,000 — had gone unpaid and been re-levied and rolled into its 2014 property taxes.

The bill was transferred to Albany County after March 31, and, as of July 31, Greulich owed the county $15,384.

Customers were shocked and saddened to learn of the store’s closing, and a former employee, Amy VanDuser, told The Enterprise that she believed if people had been aware of the situation, they would have offered help.

“I just don’t think people knew what was happening, or else we would have helped to get things back on track,” she said.

Investigator Charles Tanner said Wednesday that the case against Greulich is still pending.
