I felt the Guilderland students understood that, in the United States of America, our greatest strength lies in our diversity. They understood this even though many of them were hurting because of the prejudices they had suffered. Despite their pain — or maybe because of it — they had the courage to speak.

A gala celebration honoring Rabbi Donald P. Cashman, rabbi emeritus of Albany’s B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation, is set for Sunday, June 26, at the Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Community Center at 340 Whitehall Road in Albany, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

GUILDERLAND — On May 24, the day that an 18-year-old in Uvalde, Texas gunned down 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary School, the Guilderland School Board started its evening meeting with a moment of silence to honor and mourn the dead.

On Friday afternoon, May 27, the Guilderland Dutchmen lacrosse team hosted a Section 2, Class A semifinal matchup against Shaker. Shaker held a lead until the fourth quarter and the Dutch came back to win 10 to 9.

On Wednesday, May 25, the Guilderland Dutchmen track team took part in the Section 2, Group 1 sectional championships held at Colonie High School. The girls’ team finished second with 149 points and the boys’ in ninth with 18 points.

GUILDERLAND — After this year’s attempt to let high school students get the sleep that science shows they require, the Guilderland schools will return in the fall to the same start times the district used before the pandemic.

Carman Road between Wayto Road, home to Dunkin’ Donuts, and Marra Lane, the location of a number of apartment complexes, will be closed from Friday, June 3, at 8 p.m., until Monday, June 6, at 6 a.m., as will the access road leading to the I-890/I-90 interchange, according to a release from the state’s transportation department.
