Fourth grade Biddy C

The fourth grade “Storm” took on Burnt Hills in the first of two weekend games.  

Getting off to a slow start, the Storm held a 2 to 0 lead for the first several minutes. Caroline Burns, Empress Lee, and Ava Lia kept the Burnt Hills team at bay while dominating the boards and frustrating the post players until the Storm could get the offense going.

Laila Nino (four points) hit two key shots while Gwen Wronski and Lauren Thompson added key baskets as the half ended with Guilderland on top, 12 to 0.

The second half was all Guilderland as Valencia Fontenelle (11 points) and Grace McFerran had several key steals to put Guilderland on top for the win, 23 to 5.

The second game of the weekend against Brunswick again saw the Storm struggle in the first few minutes. Again, the defense held the opponent in check until the offense kicked in.  

Benefiting from several steals, Fontenelle (10 points), Nino (six points), and McFerran (six points) gave Guilderland a comfortable lead at the half, 16 to 4.  

Showing the depth of the team, the second half saw Thompson strip the ball repeatedly from the Brunswick guards, finding Wronski on the wing for quick baskets. In the end, Guilderland defeated Brunswick, 32 to 7, to remain unbeaten and in first place in its division as Guilderland enters the winter break.

Third grade

The GBC “White” third grade team played the Cohoes “Little Lady Tigers” on Saturday at Guilderland Elementary.

The Little Lady Dutch led from the tip-off, building a 10-to-2-halftime lead and never looking back. Lynnwood’s Bella Gitto led all scorers with eight points.

Smothering defense from Ava Bickel, Lauren Hoyle, Anki Lin, and Shayla McAnerney limited Cohoes to five points. Lynnwood’s Ava Wilson contributed three steals and four rebounds in the win.

Biddy B

The Guilderland Biddy B team had a great weekend –– defeating Scotia, 30 to 14, on Saturday, and then losing a tough fought game on Sunday to Brunswick, 19 to 17, in overtime.  

All the girls contributed in a significant way. Graycen Dubin led the scoring with 27 points over the weekend, with Grace Torpey and Julia Burke following with six points each.

Vivienne Owens once again led the defensive charge. April Richards, Ali McGrann, and Anna Ashery also played significant roles, playing aggressive defense and getting much-needed rebounds.  

The team played great and was a pleasure to watch.

Biddy A

The Guilderland Biddy A “Spunk” completed a busy weekend, racking up two hard fought victories against Scotia and Brunswick.

In Saturday’s game against Scotia, the girls played a tough game, pulling away from Scotia in the second half for a 22 to 6 victory. In the win, Alyssa Burg racked up eight points and Jennifer Bartlett had six.

The first half was a defensive battle with Guilderland leading 6 to 1 at the break. Gracie Seravillo, Nicole McGrath, and Bella Smith helped clean up the boards and keep Scotia out of the paint on defense while Jamie Golderman and Ava Fiametta spurred the defensive charge on the perimeter, logging steals and keeping Scotia off the boards from the guard position.

Sunday’s game took the Spunk to Brunswick to face a very tough opponent. From wire to wire, defense was the rule with both teams preventing the other from scoring.

Guilderland led, 8 to 6, after the first half. In the second, Guilderland had some adjustments on offense and started to get better looks at the basket. At the four-minute mark in the game, Brunswick started to press and Guilderland took advantage by scoring several points in transition to help seal the win. 

In the victory, Jennifer Bartlett had eight points and Nicole McGrath had four. Ava Fiametta, Lizzy Dollard, Jisella Vasquez all had several steals and rebounds in the victory.

Junior A

Guilderland’s Junior A team used its momentum from its last win to carry the team into another win on Saturday against Scotia.

Guilderland took the early lead, finishing the half, 21to 2, and continued to finish the game strong with an ending score of 47 to 14.

Leading offensively, Olivia Baumann finished the game with a season-high of 13 points, and Kate Johnston added 10. The girls worked as a team, giving each girl the opportunity to score. This is the first game all season every teammate was able to add points to the score.

Defensively, the rebounding duo of Skye Lindsay and Nicole Fyvie continued to be Junior A’s anchor while Kerry Gerety and Claire Thompson took control of the point.

Junior A continues to come together as a team and look stronger from week-to-week, having new girls step up and showcase their skills.

Junior B

The Lady Dutch pulled ahead early in last Saturday’s match- up against Scotia and only expounded upon its lead through the remainder of the game.

Guilderland displayed tremendous teamwork on the floor, with every player contributing to the scoreboard. The Dutch won handily by a score of 47 to 15.

The Dutch were led by Margan Kieley with 10 points, followed by Christine Fish with nine, and Lauryn Stewart with eight. Stewart also dominated the boards with five rebounds, while Kieley and Caitlin Gagan each grabbed four steals.

Guilderland faced off with Brunswick last Sunday in a disappointing loss. The Dutch were behind from the start, as the Bengals sliced through the paint for easy lay-ups.

Guilderland was unable to stem the flow of points and took the loss, 45 to 18. Emily Burns led all scorers with 10 points.
