Photos: Stop the Stigma
On Saturday May 14, Guilderland High School in Guilderland was the host for the first annual Summer Smith 5K race to raise awareness about the stigma of drug addiction.

Remembering those who were lost to addiction, Kristen Smith-Hoin, left, and her grandchildren (Smith’s two youngest kids, Caden and Anthony Smith, along with stepdaughter Tahti Houze) release pink balloons in honor of Summer Smith. A Guilderland High School graduate, Smith died of a drug overdose on Jan. 9, 2015. She was 31. Smith-Hoin organized, and ran in, the inaugural 5K race in Smith’s honor, to keep her legacy alive and to work towards ending the stigma that often comes with drug addiction.

And they’re off, as 304 runners take to the course from the high school onto School Road and Meadowdale Road

Crossing the tape: Michelle Binsfeld, 36, from Clifton Park finishes second overall, and is the first female with a time of 20:16. Mark Eisenhandler, 41, from New Paltz was the overall winner with a time of 20:03; he was followed by three females. Smith-Hoin finished with a time of 36:30.
