Photos: Farnsworth sets the hills alive with music

The Sound of Music will be performed March 7 through 9 at the middle school, 6072 State Farm Rd. in Guilderland.

"The hills are alive with the sound of music," sings Maria Rainer, played by Lily Pickett in Farnsworth Middle School's rendition of the Rogers and Hammerstein classic. Maria, who loves the Austrian hills, leaves her abbey to care for the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp. The Sound of Music will be performed March 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. and March 9 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $8, or $30 for four. The school is located at 6072 State Farm Rd. in Guilderland.

The Mother Abbess (Sadie Buerker) and Sister Sophia (Sammie Stern) sing about the problems caused by the young and exuberant postulant, Maria.

Just before World War II, young love blooms between Liesl von Trapp (Sydney Hillenbrandt) and Rolf Gruber (Riley O'Lena) a 17-year-old Nazi delivery boy.

Maria wins the hearts of the Von Trapp children — Liesl (Hillenbrandt), Friedrich (Jonah Goldsein), Louisa (Caroline Murphy), Kurt (Grant Visker), Brigitta (Josey Kralik), Marta (Carly Anders) and Gretl (Alexis Anagnastopoulos) — as she sings to them during a thunderstorm while they nestle in her bed.
