Kathleen Stempel, of the Berne Library with crossed ankles in front, sits with the second-grade class of Berne-Knox-Westerlo teacher Michelle Pahl, back row, far right, and parent chaperone, Diana Greene, far back. They took a walking field trip from the school, across the street on Helderberg Trail, on Dec. 12. Stempel opened the library early to read to the students and give a tour.
