The Enterprise — Tyler Murphy

Happy to just be alive, 92-year-old Sanford “Sandy” Berkman said he was lucky to be wounded instead of killed in the World War II battle for Iwo Jima. Twenty-six of the 53 men he led into combat would be killed and all the rest, including Berkman himself, would be wounded. In this photograph, he displays his Iwo Jima commemorative medal, Purple Heart and Distinguished Unit Citation.
