Real-time weather data displayed at miSci

Learning by degrees: Dr. Mac Sudduth, executive director of miSci, takes a visitor through the latest information on the new WeatherBug weather monitoring system.

A new weather console at miSci is giving visitors a chance to explore the science of weather.  The console lets adults and children interact with Doppler radar activity and real-time data from the onsite WeatherBug weather station installed by National Grid.

The console, installed in miSci’s main lobby, lets visitors scroll through multiple screens of real-time and historical weather information including humidity, barometric pressure, rainfall, temperature, wind speed, and times of sunrise and sunset. In addition to providing information about current conditions, the console lets visitors explore weather forecasting, climate, and data collection.

Sensors were installed on the roof of miSci’s building on Nott Terrace in Schenectady. The miSci WeatherBug Station consists of a wind sensor (to measure wind speed and direction); a sensor shelter (to measure temperature, relative humidity, heat index, wind chill, barometric pressure, and dew point); a rain gauge (to measure daily, monthly, and yearly rainfall totals and averages); and a high-definition weather display in the miSci lobby showing the current conditions, the three-day forecast, local weather alerts and the live Doppler Radar.

With the new WeatherBug station, miSci joins a network of other stations at thousands of schools, sports stadiums, public buildings, broadcast stations, public safety facilities, and parks across the United States and beyond.

Earth Networks, the parent company of WeatherBug, operates the largest weather observing and lightning network. The Maryland-based company has been deploying weather sensors in communities for 20 years.

Real-time weather and Doppler radar information from the miSci WeatherBug is online at http://weather.weatherbug.com/weather-safety/online-weather-center/OnlineWeatherCenter.aspx?aid=6114. The link is also embedded on miSci’s homepage (http://www.misci.org/), which allows visitors access to this information at any time, from any location.
