Voorheesville Library Notes for Wednesday, August 6, 2014

On Monday, Aug. 11 at 2 p.m., students in kindergarten through grade three can join us at the Voorheesville Public Library for fun activities about Scaredy Squirrel, Pete the Cat, Naked Mole Rat, and more of our favorite animal characters.

Light-trick photography

Teens in grades six and up are invited to join us on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. We will learn how to paint with light, and take a photo of your artwork with your cell phone or our iPad. We’ll gather all of the photos to make a gallery show. Please register.

Owl ecology

At 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 13 kids in grades four to six are invited to learn about the common owls of our area and how you can find them on a nighttime owl prowl. Be an ornithologist as you participate in a hands-on investigation of owl pellets. Space is limited, please register.

It’s a sense-ational

exploration

We will use our senses just like scientists to explore and understand the world. Come to an afternoon of experiments and activities on Monday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m. that will have you seeing, tasting, hearing, touching, and smelling your way to new discoveries. Intended for children in kindergarten through third grade.

Summertots

Children up to 36 months old and their caregiver are invited to join Miss Amy on Thursdays, Aug. 14 and 21 for an early literacy program that emphasizes sharing books, flannel board stories, music, rhymes, and playtime together. After the short program, the children will have the opportunity to play with the age-appropriate toys and learning activities either indoors or outdoors. Water play activities will take place outside, so don’t forget to wear your sunscreen and bring a towel and an extra change of clothes.

Save the dates

Friday Sept. 19, beginning at 5 p.m., is sneak preview night for Friends of the Library only. It’s not too late to join the friends now, or at the door. Saturday, Sept. 20, the doors open to the public at 10 a.m. The friends will also be hosting a baked goods sale, so be sure to save some room for a cookie or two. Sunday, Sept. 21, begins with the Village Animal Clinic Canine Classic 5K Run/Walk at 11 a.m. Call the animal clinic for more information. All proceeds from the marathon will be donated to Guilderhaven, Inc., a not-for-profit group that helps the animal community. At noon, the buck-a-bag day opens at the library. Fill your plastic grocery bag with books for only $1. At 12:30 p.m., the fun kicks into high gear with local band Lifeline, a high energy trio of acoustic and electric guitars playing a variety of classic rock and blues with male and female vocals. You won’t want to miss this fun family day and help support Guilderhaven.

Artist of the month

The library is pleased to welcome back local artist Susie Flansburg. Please be sure to stop by, stroll through the gallery and enjoy Susie’s oil paintings.
