Betty and the Baby Boomers will give a virtual concert for the Middleburgh Library on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m.

It’s time for another virtual concert in the Not So Quiet Concert Series of the Middleburgh Library. The featured act is Betty and the Baby Boomers, a wonderful group from the Hudson Valley.

We’re hoping that you will tune in on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. to enjoy an hour of fun music. We also hope that you’ll be kind enough to make a donation to show your appreciation. There will be a link on their website for donating.

Betty and the Baby Boomers Concert will be available on their Youtube channel at the following link: https://bit.ly/3iaa6Ls

It is a public link, so it can also be found by searching for Betty and the Baby Boomers and the name of the concert. I'll send a reminder a day or two before the concert.

Here’s some information about the group:

When Betty Boomer, Jean Valla McAvoy, Paul Rubeo, and Steve Stanne began singing together more than 30 years ago, the name made sense — a play on Betty’s name and the fact that all are children of the baby boom. Bassist Robert Bard fit right in demographically when he joined later on.

If they’ve had second thoughts, it’s too late to change now. “Betty and the Baby Boomers” appears on the covers of the band’s five CDs, and the name is known to folk music fans from the mountains of Connemara in Ireland to the Catskills overlooking New York's Hudson Valley, their home base.

In addition to original songs from Jean, the Boomers draw on sources including traditional tunes; Americana roots music; contemporary artists like Greg Brown, Bruce Springsteen, and Dougie MacClean; and classic “folk singers” like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Phil Ochs.

Whatever the source, each song is “Boomerized” — set in distinctive arrangements with three- and four-part harmonies. The singers’ voices differ in range and color; they combine in a unique and resonant blend that is the Boomers’ signature. Their vocals are coupled to impressive instrumental work on guitars, Dobro, bass, bodhran, and kazoo, or sometimes — “Look Ma, no hands”— uncoupled in a cappella selections.

This program is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered in Schoharie County by Greene County Council on the Arts doing business as CREATE.

Book Discussion

On Sept. 10 at  1 p.m. join us for a discussion of “American Dirt" by Jeanine Cummins (Outside and online). Our monthly book discussion is being done a little differently! We will meet outside the library on the back porch for a socially distant chat about the book American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins - masks are required. If you prefer, you may join us on Zoom by registering above.

After you register, you will be given the join link. Simply put that link into your browser on your laptop, computer, tablet or phone and join in the discussion. Order your copy of the book online or call us at 518-827-5142 to request a copy. You only need to register if you are joining us on zoom.

“American Dirt” will leave readers utterly changed when they finish reading it. The publisher describes it as a page-turner filled with poignancy, drama, and humanity on every page, it is a literary achievement. This is a holdover from August, as the books did not arrive in time.

For the rest of the summer, the Middleburgh Library will be closing at 7 p.m. instead of 8:30 p.m.

Imagine

Welcome to Fairies & Gnomes: Imagine Their Homes!  This is a summer learning project of the Mohawk Valley Library System, whose mission is to provide a summer of magical opportunities for families working together — using social-distancing guidelines and natural “found” materials — to build fairy and gnome homes at their own residences, on library lawns, in community parks and other local sites — wherever the shy and mystical “wood folk” might be found! In Middleburgh, you can build fairy and gnome homes in your yard, on nature paths, here in the gardens surrounding the library or the Dr. Best House and Medical Museum. Share your creations in our Facebook group 518 fairy homes.

If you have a medical reason and cannot wear a face covering, we will bend over backwards to make sure you get what you need; however you will not be allowed in the library without one. Please talk to us by calling 518-827-5142 and we will work out a solution.

Unfortunately, no bathrooms or water fountain are available at this time and no browsing of the shelves or library material. You will be able to clean your hands at our sanitizing station when you enter the building. Please note that social distancing protocols will apply. We hope to see you soon!

The next concert in the Middleburgh Library Not So Quiet Concert Series will take place on Sunday, July 26, at 7 p.m. The performers will be Pat Humphries and Sandy O, known collectively as Emma’s Revolution.

Emma’s Revolution’s songs have been sung for the Dalai Lama, praised by Pete Seeger, and covered by Holly Near. With beautiful harmonies and genre-defying eclecticism, Emma’s Revolution delivers the energy and strength of their convictions, in an uprising of truth and hope for these tumultuous times.

“The powers that be can control the media but it’s hard to stop a good song … Pat’s songs will be  sung well into the 22nd Century,” said Seeger.

Their music has been featured on All Things Considered and Democracy Now. By now, you've realized that this is not your typical folk duo! You can learn more about them at Emmasrevolution.com

Due to the weird circumstances in which we are living, the concert will be streamed live on the internet. We hope you will also be generous and give a donation.

You may register in advance at https://tinyurl.com/EmmasRevConcertSunJuly26

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Welcome to Fairies & Gnomes: Imagine Their Homes!  This is a summer learning project of the Mohawk Valley Library System, whose mission is to provide a summer of magical opportunities for families working together— using social-distancing guidelines and natural “found” materials — to build fairy and gnome homes at their own residences, on library lawns, in community parks and other local sites — wherever the shy and mystical “wood folk” might be found! In Middleburgh, you can build fairy and gnome homes in your yard, on nature paths, here in the gardens surrounding the library or the Dr. Best House and Medical Museum. Share your creations in our Facebook group 518 fairy homes and go to 518fairyhomes.com for all kinds of fun ideas!

A concert by Emma’s Revolution will be live streamed on Sunday, July 26, at 7 p.m. as part of the Middleburgh Library Not So Quiet Concert Series.

You can learn more about them at Emma'srevolution.com

Curbside pick-up

Curbside pick-up of library material began on July 6.  For the time being, our hours will be 3 to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.  Request Books online or call the library at 518-827-5142 for assistance. Unable to get to the library to pick up books?

Call us and we'll see what we can do about it! When your books are ready we will give you a call to arrange a time for you to pick them up on the back porch. Return your books to the drop box or to the tote on the back porch when you pick up your book order.

Safety

Our primary goal during the current health crisis is to offer library service in ways that are safe for both patrons and staff. To do that we plan to move carefully and thoughtfully through several phases of service this summer, always staying in compliance with the Governor's Executive Orders and CDC prevention guidelines.

Some features of our safety plan include: suspending in-library events, requiring staff to wear personal protective equipment, quarantining returned books for 72 hours before checking them in.

For updates on additional services as they are added please check out website at www.middleburghlibrary.info or our Facebook page. If you have questions, please call 518-827-5142
